That Tennessee sure does shine. In my opinion the Tennessee is the perfection of the longrifle.

Its a beaut! Long, mean, and all business. The quintessential Tennessee gunne in my opinion. Says the asking price is $1800, I seriously considered making an offer but I have a 36 caliber nearing completion. I must admit the DuPray beats my effort by a long shot though.

His Soddy Daisy rifles are top notch, some of the few contemporaries that are hard to tell from originals. Some counter that it is just the aging, but he gets the proportions and architecture of originals as well as anybody and doesn't try to "fix" the oddities of the style.

Yes, if i had a few more crackers in the box...I'd own that.

But I has a 30 pipe and a piece of walnut that I'm planning to mate before the year is up! Probably a bit more Unicoi than SD, but simple beauty is the objective. Jack is good at it. I'm werkin' on it.

I have a 25 caliber Soddy that Jack made. It is a gem. Fun to shoot. And perfect for
teaching youngsters to shoot muzzleloaders. Jack has the Soddy styling down cold.

Jack is always at the CLA show in Lexington, KY normally with two or three guns for sale. He also displays the original Soddy Daisy rifle that inspires his rifles.

Would it be correct to have a swamped barreled Tennessee Mountain rifle? I don't think I can handle a 40 or longer inch straight barrel anymore. A 36 incher yes but not a 40 or longer straight barrel.

Absolutely. Although the originals were generally more subtle in swamp than our modern machined offerings (hence the Rice "Southern Profile").

As i understand it straight-sided bbls only became the norm when machinist made bbls became commonplace. So it depends somewhat on what time period you are considering, but of the flintlock days, in TN- long and swamped is my rule.

I think many have. Some require a straight-edge. I've not straight-edged them but those who have tell me they are swamped. I prefer swamped enough that I'll only build that way.

And I take guidance from those numerous contemporary builders who do great tribute to the TN rifle, building them with swamped bbls.

Alrighty then.

There is no listing for him in the Artisans list at CLA for Jack Duprey. I just looked under "Rifles" and under "Bags".

Does anyone know where this man lives or how to contact him? I'm not buying, just would like to have a conversation or two with him. PM if necessary.

I've been to the TN-KY show once, the Lake Cumberland Show (Hammer In) twice (third is soon), and thinking I might pop down to Rogersville next weekend if the weather is permittin' and I've got some fuel in the tank. I didn't know his name at the first three shows, now I do. Will he be at the 'Bama show?

Jack lives in southern Michigan. He is 80 hopefully he will be at the Tennessee show in April that Wayne Elliot puts on. Having one of his rifles is my plan. But other things get in the way. Mike

Mr. Duprey has NAILED the Soddy Daisy style in most excellent fashion.
As personal preferences go, I don't like them at all...but he's certainly got it down, and at a very reasonable price for those who do.
I'll look forward to seeing him at the next CLA show.
