identifying an item.....

I looked at a tool the other day. I am pretty sure it has to do with muzzle loading guns.
length - just a smidge over 3 1/4"
width - 1 1/8"
thickness - just shy of 1/2"

outer material seems to be horn.
inside appears to be brass

has three, for lack of a better term, blades that swing out like a pocket knife,
they all pivot from the same end and swing out the same direction.
These are NOT blades and are NOT sharpened.
Each has a somewhat triangular part on the bottom of each "blade" that all vary in size.

my guesses.........
these may be bore gauges
these may clean out flintlock pans.

each "blade" marked.......

There is also a symbol that looks like a hot air balloon with paddles sticking out the side of what would be the gondola.

No pics yet, but will try to get some tonight.

 What you describe, sounds like a fleam, although the points of the blades should be razor sharp on the bottom protruding points. I too am very interested seeing a picture. If it is a fleam, it may have been repurpose over time. Or, It my never have been finished and sharpened.

Like said above- a fleam for bloodletting to bleed out the bad humers in the body. I think I remember reading somewhere where over blood letting contributed to George Washington's death when he was in an already weakened state.

yep a fleam and FWIW blood letting is still used in the medical field even today albeit more backed up by research.

It belongs...they regularly bled horses too...so inclusion in a possibles bag is very likely. In fact I would
suspect most fleams were used on stock and not people so much...
