World's Smallest ALR shoot
« on: October 24, 2015, 04:00:01 AM »
On October 20, the year of our Lord 2015, ALR members Bill LePard and Tom Curran (Acer) shot the world's smallest ALR shoot. Eric vonAschwege had planned to attend, but had vehicularus difficultatus, eliminating him from the competition. Had he been there, it would have been the second smallest ALR shoot in recorded history.

Paper was attacked at 50 and 100 yards, with LePard coming in first at 100 yes off the bench, with Acer grabbing a narrow second place at 50 yd offhand.

Acer kicked LePard's butt at the 50 yd gong shoot.

We hope to expand this shoot to include Vermonters (and intelligent canines) early before the next Dixon's Fair. Location and time yet to be decided.

Acer is being kind in his narrative of shooting performance.  A more accurate description of our offhand shooting was that I got schooled.  And I don't recall Acer even shooting at the 100 yard target, so any "win" there was by default.

In any event, it was a gorgeous, windless Fall day and we had the range all to ourselves. Lots of "boom" time.

However, we might not qualify for for the smallest ALR shoot.  The Duke joined us in the clubhouse and I've always assumed he is an honorary ALR member........

Hi,
Smart Dog will be happy to participate next year.  She will bring her doltish Dad along too.  A good thing about small shoots is it makes record keeping easy.

Tom,

We can see the family resemblance, but I think the Duke had more hair!
Sorry, couldn't resist.

WOW I am shocked to realize that I just broke your record! I held a smaller ALR shoot Thursday 10/22/15. Just one in attendance, me ;D

I was shooting my 16 bore fowler with round balls trying to make minute of deer at 35 yards. Small shoot due to the lack of thinner patches. Several patching materials but none thin enough to allow seating round ball and patch at the same time, at least not with only the ram rod. Ended up with the ball directly on powder held in bore by a too thick patch. Still got minute of deer size shots (2) so I declared myself winner of the shoot and the overall champion at Prince Edward County VA ALR championship 16 bore round ball match ;D

Dennis:  go to a slightly smaller ball and a little heavier patch.  A thick patch is essential to comfortable loading over a long string without cleaning, since there is so much bore to 'wipe'.  So a smaller ball...

And congratulations on your win!

If you have to patch, this is the way.

It's really fun to meet ALR friends outside the forum, it adds such depth to the experience. Dixon's, CLA, 18th Century Artisans Show, and some KRA shows are my most frequent contact with others in our interest. It's fun to get out and burn a little powder, too.

Well, Pete, given the whooping I took in the 50 yard gong shoot, overall I finished second. This gong was donut shaped with a mini-gong in the center.  Acer nailed the mini-gong several times.

It looks like you took first place in the Finger Pistol Through the Window with a Famous Cowboy match. That's always one of my favorites!

Winning the "Smoothbore Championship of the Universe"  ;D  was easy! No one else entered. Hardest part was getting that 50 inch barrelled fowler out of the truck!

Sorry, gents, but I think I hold the record for smallest ALR shoot.

I was slated to go to the range by myself this past Saturday afternoon, but with yard work, even I couldn't make it.  And so, it was the only ALR shoot ever done without anyone there.  ;)

If it was easy, everyone would do it.
