Fibre optic bore light/ scope
« on: March 14, 2009, 12:41:16 AM »
I had gotten this one from a friend. His wife is a nurse and had the chance to get one of those things a doctor uses to look in your ears when he is checking you over when the clinic bought new ones. Another friend works as a machine tech at a casino and was replacing the fibre optics that hook the slot machines together on a bank system. By taking 2 of these fibre optics he was able to hook them up side by side to the light and was able to just slide them down the bore of a rifle and see the entire bore to assess for damage. Works like a charm and was free for him to build. Now I am looking to get one for myself so I don't have to borrow his. I wonder if it can be done with just one optic rather than needing 2.

Go to the fishing dept. There is a VERY small bober light that will fit down any bore that you have beside a pellet gun. Seams I like the green colored one.

David,
Never would have thought of that but I know the ones your talking about. The nice thing with this fibre optic setup is that you can look into the lens on the scope and it will show you what is at the end of the fibre optics, allowing you to closely examine the entire bore easily. I think I will be getting one of those bobber lights as well since the one on my bobber died anyway. Thanks for the tip.

Todd -- Can you explain how the fiber was attached to the Otoscope? Fiber audio cables have a connector on the ends. That may just plug into the ear piece. One cable must have been for light, the other to view the interior of the bore. I'd love to make one, eBay has Otoscope very inexpensive, fiber cables as well.
Thanks John

Thanks David, now I just need to find a store that sells them in our area.
I check at "Dicks" and "Wal-Mart" and they didn't have them. Of course this particular Wal-Mart is crazy. They don't even sell turkey hunting supplies but the one that is much further away does. Will try there.

The link below shows what it looks like.

Brokenflint,
I will do that at some point. Gotta get someone to take pix for me though. It was actually easy to make. 2 pieces of fibre optic lines/wires?... 1 thingy the doctors look in your ears with. connect 1 fibre optic to the end of the plastic cone they put on the ear thingy, and have the opther one a bit longer so it can hook up to a light source. Tape the fibre optics together and you have it. It gives you great control and has a nice magnification to it so you can get a nice view of what you have in the bore.

Todd -- Can you tell us what kind of fiber cables he used? Most I have looked at have a rather large connector on each end. Were they a single fiber under one sheath or multiple fibers under one sheath?
Thanks John

He used  a mid sized cable for both lines. 1 of them was for the light and the other was for the viewing. The one for the light ran down next to the scope and the other cable. He works at a casino and got the fiber optics from there when they replaced some of the machines. Any size should work great as long as they can both fit into the bore freely. As for the connectors on the ends, he just uses a SHARP razor knife to cut them off, then lightly heats the end to flow out the texture on the end of the cable. You could even use that stuff they sell for repairing CD's to do this. I am tryiong to get him to get more of the fibre when they change out the machines next time.
If you have any Casinoes in your area that have the machines that are hooked together in banks so they all play into the same jackpot, you shouyld be able to get one of the slot repair techs to see if they have any pullout cable they can get for you.

I purchased a "bore scope" from Harbor Freight Tools. The tip is 8.5 mm in diameter and permits me to look down 45 cal barrels with ease. As I move the scope and light into the bore, I see on the screen what is just beyond the lens on either side of the scope. They go for about $80 and I bought mine on sale for about $65.

There is one on the net which is identical except that the bore scope is 5.5 mm and can be used for 30 cal rifles. It also is more expensive at closer to $200.

It has changed the way I clean my traditional muzzleloaders. I followed instructions learned here and on other muzzleloader sites, using water with some dish soap and swabbing the barrel with patches until the patches came out clean. I even tried the infamous Moose Milk. When I looked at those "clean" barrels with the bore scope, I was shocked! There was crud throughout the groove corners of the rifling, and plenty of it. A simple bore light did not show the dirt in the grooves. So, now I still use the water and soap, but also a nylon bore brush that gets the gunk out of the rifling. I also wrap a patch around a bore brush and that works so much better than a patch alone. The bore scope confirmed it.

I know many of you have used the patch and water method successfully for decades and have no rust or other problems. However, now that I have seen for myself what is left in the rifling of my rifles, I just take the extra step. It simply makes me feel better when I don't see black particles in my grooves.

You can buy a USB bore scope for $12 off eBay and use your computer monitor to view the condition of your bore. The one I got came with the right software, you can capture videos or snapshots, the picture quality is pretty good. I found some disturbing stuff in some of the barrels I thought were pristine. It comes with a right angle attachment as well.

This is a before and after I cleaned the crud out of one of them. I didn't know the touch hole liner was protruding into the barrel.
