how tight should the flint be?
« on: October 29, 2015, 06:59:29 PM »
I've noticed the flint in my 62 smoothie seems to loosen considerably after a couple of shots. I'm using thin leathers should I switch to lead?

No.  Use thicker leather.  I use elk leather from my old work gloves.

Nothing is hard if you have the right equipment and know how to use it.  OR have friends who have both.

Thicker leather works. I think the best might be brain-tanned elk or deer. Moose & some elk is a mite thick mostly. I've used thin sheet lead and that also works, especially in my short-throw L&R locks.

I crank down on the screw until it won't go no mo!  But another thing that helps is to grove or cut "spurs" in the jaws.  Easy to do and some makers already do it but not all.

You should cut a V or a half moon in the fold of your leather, so that when the flint is installed the back of it rests tight to the screw.  Otherwise, if it is forward, it will eventually loosen regardless of how tight you've got it cranked down.

After a few shots I will check the tightness of my flint and at times I need to tighten just a bit more then I'm good for a day at the range - 20 to 30 shots.
