Looks great Jim.  You've developed such a style that you don't even need to sign them anymore! Thanks for all the time you take to post pics and information.

Outstanding work, I purchased your carving kit and it is a great help and I often refer back to it, especially the book that you include. However I don't think that even if I had 50 years to practice I could come close to your work. Thank you for sharing!

Excellent workmanship Jim.  Very neat contemporary blend of original Virginia rifles!  Top notch as usual, though I particularly like the tone and color you've achieved in the stock of this one.

Hi Jim,
Your carving is beginning to look like engraving with the shading and details.  Very well done and inspirational.  You set a very high bar for superior work.  Love the gun.
Jim, I also get the impression that you really like Chamber's round-faced English lock.

Jim, this is such clean precise work, just awesome and inspiring. Looks like a bit of Art Deco lines on the toe area of the left side.

that's some real nice work there, the details in the carving are awesome and don't overpower the build if that makes sense. Some builds I seen have maybe a little to much carving along with inlays and engraving of the metal while great craftsmanship tend to crowd the rifle in my opinion, personal taste and not a knock on folks work.

I, too, love the finish on the stock.  Did you use an acid-base finish or dye or combination of the two or other?

Very nice. Just enough carving to be appealing but not too much to look overdone. Really like the finish too, that stock had superb curl to work with.

Thanks everybody.  This was a pretty fantastic piece of maple.  As to the stain, it was ferric nitrate crystals dissolved in alcohol.  Not sure of the ratio.  I just kept adding more crystals until a sample piece got to the color I wanted.  I tried my usual ferric nitrate stain that I make up and sell, but thought the color I got from the crystals was a little nicer in this particular case.  I mixed some Transtint amber dye with the finish as well to get a touch more warmth.  The selective darkening was done with a combination of tinted shellac and tinted oil finish.  The shellac was tinted with Transtint dyes and the oil finish was tinted with bone black.

Hope this helps.  Any questions just ask!

Thanks again,
Jim
