It is much easier to see how a tube is formed for a thinner/ bigger bore barrel such as a 1" across the flats .58 caliber, but when you look at an old barrel that is 1.375" across the flats and .45 caliber, it is hard to image just forming the tube. Skill, hard work, practice and more hard work I would guess.
Thanks so much for the pictures and video Tim.

Barrel forging can be hard work and eat up a lot of hours, but at the same time, you can have a tremendous amount of fun.  The thermometer registered 120 at times Saturday afternoon.  Coal was eat up at a tremendous rate during welding.  Clinkers got a little nasty after using some soft Iowa coal for the non-welding operations.  Lot of fines were burnt and clinkers appeared like Orcs in the Lord of the Rings--millions of'em!!  You might find it surprising how much smoke is given off from clean coke when reignited after cleaning out the fire pot.  We use some of Dan Land's fat wood and raspberry canes to start the fires.

So the English and Napoleon had a [DUST UP].  That's one of the best terms I have ever heard. That's perfectly English and perfectly Dave Crisalli.

Forging is more fun when the temperature is 34 degrees and snowy rather than 89 with 90% humidity at 8 a.m.

Tim, you are getting great barrel welding experience, especially taught by Bookie: he makes barrels from the beginning to the end.
I'm lucky to have a barrel Bookie forged, drilled, reamed, rifled and completed all by himself. It's a part of a gun now.
Why don't you post the bits you learned from Bookie here on the site?
Cheers!
