I would expect that a patch would help wipe off some fouling both while loading and firing.

I haven't shot patched balls in my smoothbores for a very long time. Paper cartridges have been far more accurate for me, and more convenient too.

The paper ctgs. are surely the way to go for hunting large game with a round ball smoothbore or large "BORE" rifle - especially in the winter time = here with temps down well below "0".

Hi Daryl.  It's going to be minus 27 deg. C this weekend when we are out.  Paper cartridges go very well with winter  ;D

Yes - found them super for the old Special Weapons hunt we used to have. Oft times, it was -40 to -56 - nasty, snappy out side and even Tracks mink oil was solid and hard. We were tenting.
