Sweet, Jim.  Congratulations on bringing a "kit" into the 21st century.  I know you put a lot of hard work into this endeavor and it really shows.  Well done!

That is a nice looking gun.  You have definitely raised the bar for the southern mountain rifle, kit or otherwise.

Architecture is superb.  Flows very well.
Are you going to sell individual parts as well (ex. a trigger guard)?

Jim,

It looks like ypu used two through bolts in the tang.  Rather than a bolt and wood screw.  Did you?  If so, what size I the rear one?

Really good looking. Mike's right of course, but there's nothing to stop the customer from using screws, or pins as they wish.

I saw this kit in Lewisburg. I am very impressed. It's a beautiful rifle, with great architecture.

Thank you everyone!  I'll try to answer a few of the questions.  If I overlook any, just ask again. ;)

The tang is held with two 8-32 bolts that extend to the front and rear of the trigger plate.  This was used  by Whitson, whose work inspired this rifle.

Assembly of the one shown was pretty easy.  It took me about a day and a half.  There was a slight amount of part fitting.  The wood basically just needed sanding, starting with about 150 grit.  The metal parts required a bit of filing to remove any parting lines etc. and then the surface was polished wit abrasive paper to about 320 grit.  The barrel was draw filed as well.

Those with less experience, will no doubt take longer, but assembly shouldn't be too bad.

I'd like to also add, that this gun can be customized a bit as well.   A grease hole or patchbox could be added.  A nose cap (poured or sheet metal) could be fit,  A few moldings could be cut on the cheek piece, some moldings  could be added to the buttplate and ramrod pipes, a silver name plate could be added to the barrel etc.  The gun could be finished up in an "as new" fashion or it could be heavily aged.  There are many possibilities for sure...

This really has been a huge undertaking.   Much bigger than I'd ever imagined.  Things are going well, however.  As I mentioned, the first shipments should go out sometime next week.

Thanks again for the wonderful response and if you have any questions at all just ask!

Thanks,
Jim

I keep checking in. When I get my two current projects wrapped up, this one's on the list. I'm hoping someone will post pics of one in walnut.

Hey there.  I'm in Columbiana  County.  Maybe about 25 miles from the PA border.  Glad you like the rifle kit!

Beautiful.

Many originals have iron side plates. One can get a version of these from Dixie, but, well, then it is obvious one got them from Dixie.

Perhaps include patterns of a few actual original sideplates, then the builder can saw & file his own out of some flat black iron strip?

Jim is there any chance you could offer a 48" range rod with the kit? Rods of that length seem to be a bit on the scarce side.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Jason (Rice Bbls) had a table load of 48" SS range rods at York.   Pretty sure they were 48".  I know he had a 48" Southern Profile bbl on display and range rods.

I just bought one from Jason for a 48" barrel. He sent me a rod plus a short extension. Very well made and reasonable price. Fast turn around too.
