.445 ball in .45 caliber rifles
« on: July 07, 2016, 11:17:50 PM »
I have a variety of .45 caliber muzzleloaders, mostly Italian (and a Tingle!)

Is it reasonable to assume I can use .445" in most of these?   I am itching to try my hand at casting my own lead ball rounds, so I'm looking to pick up a few molds for PRB loads that I shoot often.

If it was easy, everyone would do it.

Sure can. And I just happen to know where you can get a nice new mold at a bargain price! So come on down to Crazy Squirrel Pizza's .445 Round Ball Emporium and get yours while supplies last!

You could buy some balls of what ever size you want to try and get an idea before you buy the mold.

I have enough .45 caliber rifles, it's a reasonable bet .445" balls will work well in at least a few.

You might want to buy some .440s and some .445s for a trial.  Those Italian guns might not be true .45s  .440s might work better.

My son's (and now soon to be my grandson's) little .45 kids rifle I built from an old CVA Kentucky rifle (shortened the barrel and made a maple half stocked for it) performs great with a .017 pillow ticking patch and .437 round ball with loads of 20, 30, and 40 grains of 3fg Goex. I had my son start out with light loads and as he grew older and became effieicent at loading I then would up the charge and ball size to .440, though the .437 worked so well he just stayed with those.  Now the barrel on this rifle was shortened from 33 inches to 26 inches and it has a 1 in 66 twist with .008 depth rifling.

Just throwing this out here as I believe the best route is to test different ball sizes, patch, and charges, to see what works best for a particular rifle and what it will be used for. This little kids rifle was never intended to be anything other then a kids shoot rifle a Rendezvous and it sure proved itself in my son's hands.

Good suggestion, Smylee.
Nothing is hard if you have the right equipment and know how to use it.  OR have friends who have both.

IMHO you might start with the .440" ball then try some .445" ball.  My H&A underhammer asks for a .435" ball but a .440" works as long as the patch isn't too thick.  My two other .45s get a steady diet of .440" ball from a Lee DC mold and a .024" patch.  .445" ball cast from my Lyman mold loads and fires same as the smaller ball.  So buy both sizes before investing in a mold.

re: your Tingle - both my Tingle's prefer .437 balls patched with .018 ticking, I would have to use a mallet to start a .445 ball even with thin patching.

I edited my post above. I originally posted a .433 round ball when I meant to post .437... Sorry for any confusion.
