Storing extra barrels...
« on: September 23, 2016, 05:58:43 AM »
I have acquired a couple of GM drop in barrels for my TC Hawken.  How do y'all store these barrels when not on the rifle?  Is there some kind to case for sleeve for these?

I store mine in a corner. I don't like to store guns or barrels in any kind of case. Welcome to the forum.

Yes, that's where mine is now, in the corner!

RIG the bores and leave them in a dry place where you will see them often.  Rust is insidious stuff and you need to examine the barrels regularly for it.

Store them in the open, either horizontally or resting vertically ON THEIR MUZZLES!  Same with finished rifles.

I have a stack of barrels on the shelf under my hobby's bench.  They've been there for many years. Taylor, on the other hand, stores his 'extra' barrels individually on pegs, not in a pile like mine.

Ken Bresein ,the famous barrel maker, used to store them corked and full of motor oil.

I store my barrel blanks and used barrels differently.  I hose them down inside and out with LPS-3.  I then wrap then in plastic wrap, like from the kitchen.  Sealed up tight with many layers, burrito style.  I put a card in the wrap describing the barrel.  They are then stored in a cabinet in a big pile.  My location has very low humidity.  The platic wrap helps prevent scratches. I have to many barrels for pegs on a wall and don't have space to store them vertiically.   Never seen a spec of rust on any of them.
