What time period would this type of rear sight be used? When did it start being used?

I have two similar sights. One is on a gun I own, and shows no signs that it was a later addition. The other is nearly identical, but instead of a wedge elevator it has a screw. The decorative file work on these sights ar nearly identical, which leads me to believe they were made by the same person. The gun is a late percussion produced sometime after the Civil War.

I have an original Dixon and Gilmore made in Louisville Ky circa 1855 with a similar sight.

I have an E. Morse, Jr. rifle made circa 1840 that has an elevation adjustable rear sight that I'm quite sure is original. I believe that they can easily date to the 1830's, but are more commonly found on rifles by New York and New England makers or gunsmiths who went west from there. These sights were common by 1850.
