Have been wanting to do one of these for awhile. Over all it is 37", the tip is about 5/8" and at the top it is about 1 1/4". The Blade is 20" and the handle about 5 1/2", so overall 25 1/2".
The shaft is Maple, I split it down the middle and inlet half the thickness of the blade on either side. I had already cut down and reshaped the blade, I took about 8 1/2" off of it. It came from a Sword I found at a Flea Market, from what I could get from the markings it was German made. On one side, about 3" in, I inlet a flat spring to hold the blade in, a piece of Steel Strap was used for the spring. a small screw holds it in place. Then it was glued back together, TiteBond III and clamped up, I cannot find the seam. I left the blade in it so I could move it every once in awhile to keep any extra glue from closing up the opening.
All the shaping was done by hand, using a straight edge and soot to try and keep the high spots out.
The handle is from a very large Whitetail, two pins hold it in place. It has a Brass cap on it as does the Stick, I pinned those on as well. The Four Pewter bands were poured in place, I figured they would help hold things together. The Eight Brass Hearts, front and back, are inlet and held with Two pins each, I tried to taper them as they went down the shaft. The tip is turned Antler, I threaded it and the cane itself, a Brass bolt goes up through it and screws it all together.

Tim,
Another great piece of work.  Very nice.  Never thought of leaving the sword in the sheath while gluing the two halves back together.  I will put that bit of information in the back of my mind for later, should the need ever arise.

All I can tell you is, don't take one to the airport, or to the courthouse when you go in for jury duty. I walk with a cane, and when I went in for jury duty, they took my cane, gave me a loaner, and ran mine through the scanner.

A piece of art indeed  8)-- very nicely done  ;D. That being said -- please be careful the law may not look at it the same way WE do ;)

Our Democratic governor, McAuliffe, Has vetoed a bill meant to do away with the silly switchblade ban.  And vetoed a bill to allow VETERANS to carry concealed sidearms.  Not sure where the "cane sword" falls within that spectrum.  Our veterans, both still on active duty and discharged, can still carry small sticks as long as they are not concealed.

Tim, you are vastly more talented that even you realize.  I love that cane.

You told me you were working on it brother, but I had no idea how elaborate you'd make it.  Those bands and hearts are really sharp.  Super work all around.  The Renaissance Man strikes again!  Marc

very nice work, things like that are always cool!Never got the law regarding such things here in Pennsylvania. You can get a concealed carry permit for a hand gun but switchblades and swordcanes and such are verboten, never understood it.

"Renaissance man" is a good descriptive.  If I tried something like that I'd be called "Ruinaissance man".  ;D

Thanks for all the Comments. A couple of things I am not happy with but hopefully I learned something form them.
I did not make it with the intent to carry it, I figured someone will buy it as a show/collectors item. Stay tuned I have a couple more in mind but have some horns to finish up first.
I will say it was a fun project and I almost hated finishing it up.

 Thanks Again, Tim

Very well thought out and executed. I use a cane anymore but I'm thinking this one would get me in trouble. ;D

Tim, Your beautiful walking stick brings to mind a story that John James Audubon wrote in his journals:

"Saturday, 28th {April, 1827 in York, England}. During my early walk along the Ouse {River} I saw a large butterfly, quite new to me, and attempted to procure it with a stroke of my cane; but as I whirled it around, off went the scabbard into the river, more than half across, and I stood with a naked small sword as if waiting for a duel. I would have swam out for it, but that there were other pedestrians; so a man in a boat brought it to me for sixpence.”

Trying to figure out how to display it, I think this is the answer. Scrap Walnut and a couple of antler forks.

That is very clever and good looking cane.
AND it is a good day when someone teaches Dave R. something!
I would get into trouble with such a thing. It's funny I can carry a LCR, but not a sword cane.

I think you could hide a sword in one of your gourd banjo necks. :)
