Glued Ramrod Thimbles
« on: March 28, 2017, 09:08:29 PM »
I am beginning a rework on a Kentucky type rifle that was built in the 70s and have ran into a problem . The ramrod thimbles were glued into the channel . I am concerned that if I try to pry them out I will break the bottom of the stock . Any of you ran up on this ? If so how did you remove them ?

Play a fine flame over the pipe until it starts to smoke a bit.  The pipe should lift out of the glue without a problem.

l defer to Taylor but when I run into a similar situation, I place the tip of a soldering gun on the metal part and heat the part to see if that will release it. Small parts can get pretty hot quickly.

If it's superglue, it will release at 250 degrees. ....Fred

Numrich Minuteman rifles had the pipes glued in, and not evenly spaced either.

If it is epoxy, then really cold works to pop it off. As in dry ice

Thanks ya'll . I used a small butane soldering torch and they came right off with very little heat .

SEE !!! DON`T DOUGHT  TAYLOR!!!     I like that,  it`s  kind of catchy  but, VERY TRUE !!    We are very blessed to have a  few THOUSAND !! years of experience to call on with this forum . With all of the things that have been encountered by members over the years there`s someone on here that has had experience with everything from birthing babies to sending rockets into space "literally" . When it comes to gunbuilding this is the place.      Taylor , when I stated a few thousand years experience I wasn't trying to pin it all on you !!!  LOL !! With the most respect I value your opinion,  as well as all of our forum.   Nate
