mitch yates rifle, should I send it back?
« on: May 05, 2017, 02:58:41 AM »
As most of you know Mitch built me a Christian Springs style flintlock.  I took delivery of it 4 week or so ago.  I have been wanting to get out to shoot it, but lots of other things got in the way.  When I could go, it was windy or rain.

So, last night I got out to shoot it.

I set up my bench at 15 yards.  No use getting frustrated.

My first shot was the bulls eye.  I looked through the spoting scope and thought, "that was lucky" , so I decided to give it a second try.  So, with two holes cutting the bull, I moved back to 50 yards.

I shot around 35 shots last night at 50 yards.  The rifle was shooting a couple of inches to the left so I was trying to slowly drift the front sight.

I ended up drifting the sight left and right, I could not seem to get it to center, but popping out on one side or the other.  I was also playing around with how much priming powder to use, to pick or not to pick.

The picture of the group was I think my worst group.    In addition to playing with the sights I was also playing around with 70 or 75 grains for my vertical center.

With everything I was doing and playing with I am very happy with my less than 3" group at 50 yards.

Next trip to the range I will get it locked in at 50 (I hope) and then see what happens at 100 yards.

The ignition was really good.  I never had to do anything to the flint.  The rifle seems to like a full pan vs a half a pan.

It is a .54 cal, used a .015 patch, with a .535 ball.  This load is fairly tight.  I started at 70 grains of 2f swiss.  I have very good luck of simply changing my powder load for the various yardages.

I am a very inexperienced flintlock shooter and I have quite a bit to learn yet.

I think I will keep the rifle.

I love a beautiful and accurate rifle.

Since you said that you're going back out for additional testing I'll wait to comment. But what I will comment on is, that is one beautiful, rifle.

Beautiful rifle, you should be proud.
When first shooting a new rifle if the sights are on paper I don't touch them until I've found my absolute best combination of patch, lube and ball. I then start moving the sight until it's centered, then shoot a clean group of 5 shots. All this at 25 yards. If it looks good, then I move back to 50 and see where it's hitting.

Sometimes it not the sights. It's how consistent you are on the trigger. Just my $.02 Oldtravler

That's pretty nice, fleener! What a score.
Looks like it might shoot, too.  If you want, send it on up and I'll work up a load for you. ::)

I appreciate the offer.  I would have to retrain the rifle when it came South of the border in 10 years.

The rifle was shooting so consistently it did not bother me to play around with the sight picture, drifting the sights, changing the load 5 grains, playing with the prime etc.    If I had just been shooting for group size I think I could of easily cut the group in half at 50 yards.

Certainly happy with this rifle.  Mitch did a great job and it is looking like it will be a very accurate rifle.  Cant ask for much more than that.

Definitely, given how small an area the black is on that target. Trying to figure out why it creeps to the right.

Fleener- you've many years of enjoyment ahead of you with this rifle.  I'd likely keep it, myself, instead of sending it back.

Well, I guess I will keep it.  It has a letter F engraved on the thumb piece, so it must be mine.

I don't know about that, why is there an 'F' there if your name is Snapper? Shouldn't it be an 'S'

kinda tough shooting in late day sun.

Put a couple hundred round balls though it..then tweak it...

Hope you don't take it hunting..You will be very distracted... :)

The satin finish on that wood looks soft and mellow!

You should let Mitch display that rifle at Dixon's if he's going to be there this year.  A lot of people would enjoy viewing that particular rifle.  Congrats.

I would not have a problem with that, however shipping and insurance is not cheap.

She's a beauty.  If you're not using her the week after Thanksgiving, I'd be proud to take her in the Penna woods for you. ;)

Snapper,
I know I told you how much I liked it when you showed it to me at Friendship but I just wanted to say again it is one special rifle. Did you get to shoot it in the match over on the primitive side? Wish I had made different plans and stayed longer I enjoyed hanging out with you guys. I wanted to offer to buy lunch for letting me shoot your other rifle but I got distracted when we were looking at that Henry.

It was my pleasure to get to meet you.

I did get to shoot it at the woods walk.  I only got 2 out of 17 targets.  The rifle fired just fine, it was the nut behind the trigger that was loose.

These flinters I dont think will ever catch on.

If it doesn't work out as a rifle then the next option is make it
into a floor lamp. Cock lock once and the light comes on,cock
it again and it goes off.Mainspring should be removed for this
type of conversion  ;D
That Henry IS a nice job even if you did use my fanciest lock on it.
