Interesting worm

I found this one broken off inside a rifle by William Schreckengost. I think it somewhat unique. It threads on one way for use and threads on the opposite way for storage.
I've not seen one like it before.

I've got a functionally identical one that came with a 19th century European shotgun. The rest of the ramrod is modern (Ramin fitted with a cartridge for a tip) but I believe that the worm is original to the gun.

I had one like that on a John Moll rifle. I always thought it was a neat idea.

It's really an ingenious concept.  Goes to show that it doesn't have to be modern to be good.

I see these occasionally on percussion guns.... right now I am looking at one virtually identical to Shreckmeister's  on a Tioga County, Pa gun by W E ROBBINS.

Missed the bit about the rifle at first, too busy looking at the worm...What was the caliber of the rifle and the size of the worm? The one I have is about 1/4" wide for a 20 gauge shotgun, and seems to small in proportion to the bore to hold a wad of tow tight enough to the barrel to get down inside rifling. I'd want a worm much closer to bore size if for a rifle, I'd think.

I have a couple of Larry's tow worms that I use with my fowler and my brown bess.  You can spread the prongs out to fit whatever size bore you need to clean.
