Hawken Buttplates
« on: June 15, 2017, 11:11:41 PM »
I am going to be forging an early Hawken buttplate soon for a project of mine. Forged and brazed. I will be using the forging dies made and used by my grandfather T.K. Dawson for all of his Hawken rifles. I can make up some others while I am at it if anyone has any interest.

How about dimensions - pictures - price? Certainly will not purchase sight unseen :-\.

Hi Mark,

Per ALR rules, you will need to post a price for your goods.

Gentleman unfortunately my phone will not allow me to post pictures, I will gladly email to someone if they were willing to post. The dimensions are 4 1/2" x 1 1/4" wide and comb will be roughly 3" long allowing someone to cut back to exactly what they want. I am asking $80 includes shipping. As stated earlier I will be making some for myself soon and was checking to see if there was any other interest.

Before I commit, I will want to see an example of your work.  So post a picture or three when you can.

I believe I figured the photos out. As stated I have not made any new ones up yet but here is the last one I made for and early full stock Hawken.

This young man is following in his grandfather Tom Dawsons foot prints and that butt plate looks
like the ones that Tom made all those years ago. As I said in an earlier, recent post,
You can see what a man thinks of himself and his customers by looking at his work and Mark
Brier will be like Tom Dawson. The ability is THERE and I think the integrity is there as well.
This level of craftsmanship is never cheap nor should it be and the butt plate will still be here
LONG after the money paid for it is forgotten.

Joe,
I still have people complain about a $150 Hawken lock.I have a harsh
come back to that. I tell them the lock is free but the labor (time) it
takes to make it is NOT. There are still a number of people who think
anything and everything made for a muzzle loader MUST be cheap.
Another harsh come back is,"Cheep is what you get in a carton of
baby chickens".

Jay,
No I did not receive a pm. I have not received some others either from people. Maybe if everyone wanting some could post it here and how many I will write them down. I would like an idea of how many to make. Thanks
