Two Part Antler/Horn Screw Tip
« on: August 16, 2017, 04:38:28 PM »
Another in the style of a horn seen on page 212 of Dr. Jay Hopkins book Bone Tipped & Banded Horns.
If I had to pick I would say this is my favorite horn in the book.
It is about 14" around the outside curve and 11 Tip to Tip. The Walnut Butt is about 2 1/2", hollowed out about 3/4s its length. It is held in place with 4 Brass tacks and 4 iron pins. The finial is turned from a piece of Whitetail antler and is attached with a screw. The tip is of Two pieces, the collar is antler threaded about half way through 1/2-11NC, it is held to the horn with 4 iron pins. The tip itself is horn, threaded 1/2-11. Below the collar is a turned horn band, it is held by 3 iron pins.

Cool! When I opened the post, I looked at the photos first. I thought, "Hey, I saw that in Jay's book."  I learned I was correct when I read your post.  Well done Tim. 🙂  See you tomorrow or Friday. Marc

Tim,

You are just going to town with that book.   I think that I am going to make the one on page 145 for my new outfit.

Best,

Mark

For those of us who don't have Jay's book, can you tells us a bit about the original - particularly where it is from?

Thanks

There is little provenance, its traits have been seen in other Virginia horns.

Good looking horn ;D
Nothing beats the feel of a handmade southern iron mounted flintlock on a cold frosty morning
