Preliminary Pics on a few knives.
« on: September 08, 2017, 05:42:57 AM »
Here are a few preliminary pics of knives that I was finally able to get finished tonight before work. Better pics and descriptions will come tomorrow. I developed a new method and mixture for my handle stains. Two of these knives have also been done using a new method of aging that I will use from here on out with metal aging.

JD,
My favorite knife is also the top one. Love the handle. Are you going to tell us your staining and metal ageing technique?

My plan is to put together a little tutorial on my staining and will probably share the aging process also .

No big deal, but just to cut down on confusion...my name is not "JD". There have been several folks on there calling me that, but I am not sure where that came from. My name is Casey. My ALR hand is my first and middle initial and last name "jcmcclure"

I do too...it is always interesting how antler will stain differently. All three knives were done in the same stain, at the same time, in the same pot, for exactly the same time. I think the difference came from the fact that the antler material on that particular knife was much harder than the other two.

I have also noticed that sheds will stain differently from cutoffs and the really old sheds that got a little weather will take on very rich color.

Love the blade shapes. I have been dabbling with dyeing antler with alcohol based leather dyes and have had good luck.

I picked up material that is going to allow for some integral bolster blades!

Casey,
Beautiful knives.

Question...When you look down on the spine of the blade at the pewter bolster, does spine of the blade show with two halves of pewter around it or is it pewter all around?

It is going to go completely around, but depending on the design and fit up to the handle it will vary in look from knife to knife. I will have to take a few pic for you.

I got some pewter to try a pour bolster.  Just couldn't tell if it looked like pinned on metal bolsters or completely encircled the blade at the handle.  So if it encircles the blade, you need to have the blade a little ground down from the handle?  Jeff

I'd love to see a picture of the blade/handle before you pour the pewter.  This is a whole new style for me...but it is a lot of fun.
