Kibler kit barrel size
« on: September 08, 2017, 06:19:52 AM »
I'm thinking of putting a steel nose cap on the Southern Mountain Rifle kit I have coming. What size is the muzzle? 13/16"? Thanks

wouldn't it be better to ask Jim?  You know you'll get the right answer.

I just checked the one I am finishing up and the barrel mic's .751 at the muzzle. I checked the mandrell that I use to make the cap and it mic's .754". I have the rr groove on the bottom of my caps, you might be able to get by without it but the wood will end up very thin.

Thanks for the replys.  One thing I might add is that making a steel nosecap with a thin web like these kits have requires a bit of skill and care.  I generally don't suggest this for someone just getting started with these things.  I also don't recommend trying to use a commercial cap.  If you do choose to make a cap, I would use steel around .030 or a little less.  It would be best if you form a slight groove in it as well.

Jim,

Why do you suggest not using a commercial nose cap?

I suspect because you won't be able to get it to fit his stock profile.

Jim has left very very little wood to be removed from his stock.  It is unlikely that a commercial cap will have the same contour and dimensions as his stock.

I agree with Taylor.  You won't find a commercial one to fit.  It's not an easy task to make one either for those without much experience.  I suggest leaving as is and moving forward.
