No Smylee,  I did not, when I left that morning ( In a hurry of coarse)  I did it with a abbreviated bag so I brought none with me, very bad mistake.   Even keeping the lock under my blanket I thought would help keep it dry but the priming just kept turning to mud.

Add "wet" to that and you have my opening day.  Gun fired just fine, however.

I have a new flintlock hunting picture from this morning; I thought she had stepped out from behind the sapling that was covering her vitals, apparently not.....

She left unharmed.

Erick,  many years ago, I did the same thing, buck trotting through the cutoff,  I swung ahead of it and boom shot a small popple  I didn't see in my swing.  Better luck next time right.

Eric, now you have a good reason to build a bigger bore rifle!

That's an eye-opener for sure, Eric.

As to a larger calibre?

Amazing how much timber a .69 will travel through and still hit the mark (or close enough to it) to do the job,

even at 100yards.

It was being driven at a good clip, though by it's 6 dram powder charge.

The second shot only went through a few of the 1" diameter willow trees, hitting on point of aim and dropping the moose.

Thus, I know through experience, not only a WW 466gr. ball, but a pure lead 482gr. ball will work fairly well in 'brushy' areas,

with unseen obstacles between muzzle and critter.

Eric, you can do a full body mount on that at very little cost. I too have done the same.  :)

That was a .530 ball with 85gr of 2F behind it at 50 yards. The sapling was blue beech, AKA muscle wood, really tough stuff.

I shot a small tree like that as well Eric!  Had a chance of a shot, between two trees, and thought I may 'zig or zag' and I did!
That was years ago, and when I see the tree, healed up now, I recall the incident.   :)

Took shorty matchlock out yesterday, but snow very crunchy. Did put up a nice w-tail buck within about 50 yards, but small -re-growth spruce had him well covered.
He stood and I couldn't see him at all until he moved.  At last he did move...just as I was "attending to my match" !...he'd just passed a thinner bit of cover ,and could just see his backside as he stopped again behind thicker stuff.  In the end, he took off and not a chance of a shot.
Makes the old flintlock seem easy!

Buddy of mine shot a sapling like that Monday with his shotgun at the local NWR special hunt.  I took my .58 flinter and shot a nice sika stag instead.    ;D

Few more sika from this year.  Took the spike in early MZ season, as well as a hind/doe then, both with flintlock after kayaking in.  The big two stags were crossbow kills, one on state marsh, the other on the NWR.

In what manner and how long does it take to make blue beech palatable? ;D

This will be my first season hunting with any sort of black powder.  Earlier this year I got a .45 flintlock in a trade with someone from this forum and am looking forward to hunting with it during the Kentucky ML season next month.

Nice job Osprey, with what looks like a dedicated Sika rifle.   :)

Yeah, that's my first build.  I cringe when I look at many things on it, but I don't mind taking it out in the salt marshes and the kayak because of that.  Still like the stag on it though, although I'm yet to kill one to match with it!

Good luck to all this season.  Working during the week-long general gun season here in Ohio this week has been killing me.  Looking forward to hunting the 4 day muzzleloading season in January.

Congrats, Osprey!  Looks like you're using a traditional American flintlock to fill up a freezer full of non-traditional venison.  :)  You guys must be overrun with those imported deer.  I've never seen or eaten one.  How do they taste compared to whitetail and other North American venison?
