Marc, I have updated the original post with pictures of the carving and some of the engraved furniture. I have started the finishing process and will try to post pictures of the finished rifle next week. I hope to have the rifle finished and at the Virginia show next weekend.

Jim, everything about this rifle from architecture to engraving to carving is just super and makes me say "wow!"  The little details like the couple pieces of silver wire inlay, the rod pipes, etc. are very nice.  Nice piece of wood, too.  I look forward to seeing it finished.

Jim,
You are doing a fantastic job on the Volger rifle. After seeing some originals this spring at Old Salem and you are capturing the essence of those beautiful rifles. Can not wait until we see the finish on it! Congratulations and thanks for sharing your build with us.

I finally finished the Vogler project and it turned out very well. I took it to the Virginia show this past weekend and got a good response from everyone. Here are a few pictures of the finished rifle, I hope you enjoy them and thanks for looking.

Jim, you did not disappoint us one bit, it turned out magnificent!  Perfect color on the wood - could you share some details of the stain/finish used?

Thanks for all the great comments everyone. This build has been quite a challenge and had me pushing my boundaries on several occasions. Here are the specifics of the rifle.

Barrel is a 48" 50 cal custom profile made by Charlie Burton of FCI barrels. The profile of the barrel is based on the barrel of my original Thomas Simpson rifle. I was very pleased with the overall balance and proportions that this profile gave to the rifle.

The lock is a Davis Twigg and I really liked this lock.

Triggers are modified L&R double set triggers.

Reeves butt plate and trigger guard. Sorry I do not remember the number on them.

Stain is Aqua Fortis and a Linseed Oil based finish with a dryer and amber tint added - hand rubbed

Stock is a piece of Freddy Harrison's stump cut quarter sawn sugar maple.

Patch box, toe plate, thimbles, noise cap, vent pick holder and sights were made by me.

All the inlays are sterling silver and cut by me.

All the engraving was done with a Lindsey Palm graver, sorry guys H&C is to hard on my old hands.

This build was started in late July and I have worked steady on it until now.

Again thanks for all the great comments they are truly appreciated.

You really captured the look of rifles out of Salem, NC.  The architecture is spot on, and the decorative frills attest to some serious studying.  I do love the dramatic finish you brought out of that curl.  Now.....on to the next patchbox release design!
Thank you for letting me look this one over at the CLA show Jim.  I really enjoyed the visit.  Objects are just objects.  It's the person behind the object that is the fun and important part.  God Bless,   Marc

Oh yes, I love that mountain rifle in your ad in the current Muzzleloader magazine.  Not what I think of when I think of your work, but spot on architecture and feel.  Super job good sir.  God Bless,   Marc
