Years ago, but my second build.
« on: November 05, 2017, 05:58:37 AM »
Well Gents, this was my second build.

First was a Jim Chambers Mark Silver, and when I had it done, I thought I'd short-changed myself, as I hadn't really built it, I'd just put the bits together if you know what I mean.
So this one I got a blank, unshaped from Suzie Biccio if I remember right, and alock again from Jim, plus a buttplate and T-guard from T O T wolf.
(Chopped and changed guard a good bit.)  & a Colrain 38 "swamped tube.
Rest wasa homemade out of scrap here on the farm.
Question;
Can you guess who I was influenced by in making this one??   :-)
Yes, it looks a bit over-aged, but up here in Canada they were talking about restricting all guns except antique at that time, so I figured to try making antique then!
Anyway, it was that long ago it won't hurt my feelings if you bash it !!  LOL!

You can see I got the pin for the t-guard lug too low.  I found that easy to get wrong!

Best regards,
Richard.

Mike,

I laughed out loud at your reply!!!

Yes, you and Old Traveler have it sussed, a bit Herschel House influenced!  :-)  (His guns always look so Handleable....like you just Must pick them up and shoulder them!)
Pleased you all seem to like it.  There are things I'd do different now, or try to do better, but I also remember the commentator of American Pioneer Videos , on Contemporary Longrifles, saying, "Herschel avoids the pitfall of overdoing his work" and that stuck with me.  Very important point for a Colonial gun I think.

Cades Cove Fiddler,
If you can get a look at Herschel building a longrifle on the American Pioneer series, it shows his "ageing" recipe, plain old Clorox bleach and water, and that it what I did with this one.  It's a bit savage if you go away and forget about it, LOL!  (Ask me how I know!)
But does give a sort of aged or different look.
Some of the metal was already rusty and pitted from the scrap pile, so I didn't bother cleaning it down to all shiny, so some parts were a bit aged when constructed.
I made this one for my son, so took the photos before I parted with it.
It's a .54 with a coned muzzle.
Again chaps, pleased you like it!

PS, I don't have photos of the next one I made, so will have to take some one day.  (For that one, I Still thought I'd short-changed myself, so bought a lock (Jim C  again, and made the  rest, except for the small wood screws in the patchbox. Rest was all homemade.)

Have pictures of others though, but not Woodbury exactly.
(Still laughing Mike!)

Richard.

I thought I recognized both of those guns, and , sure enough, Volume 2 of Mark Baker's " A Pilgrim's Journey" has a photo of you and that rifle on page 233  as well as photos of the matchlock on following pages. Very nice work indeed.  The article by Mark dates back to 2003.  Interesting note re your reason for building due to the Canadian laws of the time...or potential laws.  I built a flintlock long range .45 cal bullet rifle for shooting in the Canadian DCRA 1000 yard matches during that time.  The officials were rather perplexed by my putting " N/A " in the line requiring the firearm registration number  ;D   Thankfully that is behind us for the time being.  ::)

Well Bob, That Is a surprise!  I thought I had a copy of that issue but can't find it.
I Think it may be a different but similar rifle though.  Is the patch-box like this one?  I Thought that the one in Marks article had a captured lid?
Thanks for letting me know what year that article was in.  Time Flies!

I think as well matchlock had  a different front sight at that time. Wasn't happy with it.

Thanks again Bob.
Thanks to all. Very  kind of you.
Richard.

Rocklock,

I like you user name!
I have some fast taper reamers. They were grandfathers.  Very old now. (reamers that is!)   I just twisted one by hand to create a lead in.
Makes for a thumb start and hasn't hurt the shooting at all. Mind, I haven't shot it much for some time, as I gave it to my son.

All the best,
Richard.

Richard, You may live in Canada , but I believe you could pass for  a Woodbury boy! . Like Mike stated earlier, I think you build a nicer Woodbury than some of the natives. I like all your metal work, but your beautiful architecture, is very nice. Do you need another son , to build a rifle for?    Great Work!!   Nate
