My guess would be it either a flat out phony with S. Hawken stamped on the barrel, or its a restock of a Hawken rifle, by someone who didn’t know what a Hawken looked like.

Looks like a restocked barrel to me. Some of the other parts might go with the barrel too, or not. All for only 57K. ::)

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Could the rifle have been photoshopped into the two old pictures?

I hope if it does sell that the buyer can get their money back if they don't like it.

Heck, the “old photos” aren’t all that old. The gun had probably already been gunboogered by some nimrod. Most of the furniture looks like some I’ve seen on late S. Hawken rifles. I think the silver buffalo, caste on nosecap without an entry thimble, and very shiny finish, are all later additions.

Nothing looks old about it. I think it's just someone's "rendition" of a Hawken rifle, made in the 1950s or'60s.

Please understand, I am not disagreeing with any of you. I cannot read the date on the newspaper article and the description insinuates that it is from the early 1900's.. My only explanation was photoshop.  The trigger guard resembles one of my own design that I had a mold made for about 20 years ago. Essentially it was a modificaton of a typical Hawken plains rifle guard with a finger spur and front and rear finials added for use on a late local gun with short bar triggers

The date on the newspaper looks to me like 1969 but my eyes aren't that great . The way those guys are dressed looks late sixties also.

A couple of our guild members are in Whitehall. I sent one the link. Maybe he'll comment about the seller.

The survival rate of Hawken rifles is about the same as engraved Colts, about 300 percent.

I believe the fullstock Hawken on gunbroker some months back looked more authentic than this'n, but I am like Wattlebuster, just an ol neck o the red that don't know much. It does look to me like a 60's period build, maybe with an orig Hawken barrel, but may have been stamped with a period made stamp. Looks like some of the re creations in Dingle Bairds books.  8) 8) 8) Dave F
