Five knives
« on: November 23, 2017, 12:28:27 AM »
Finally finished these. The big one I posted about a month ago. The others were all products of one morning at the forge. The smallest was posted last week as I ended up finishing it first. The second one down has a coin silver pommel and all four with antler handles have pewter bolsters. The fourth one down gave me the most trouble...seems like there is always an @&# in the group! If the finish on the handle looks different, it is. I wasn’t happy with the shape near the bolster so I filed it down. Then, in an effort to remove the file marks, I ended up polishing it. Then I had to patch a small piece of the bolster and got a spot on the antler too hot and scorched it. So when I dyed it, that spot stuck out badly. So I used a torch and darkened the whole thing and dyed it again and was surprised at the color, which I actually like. Not sure if I like the polished look yet though.

I think these have a really nice style.  I’m not a big knife guy so gravitate toward those nice slim ones.

Nice knives. What kind of stain? I like the color. What type steel and how do you temper?

It’s 1084 steel.  I’m too stupid to use the complicated steels successfully. Heat treated then two tempering cycles at 450. The dye is Rit dye and tea bags brought not quite to simmering. Doesn’t take long to get the color.
