Since there are only a few members here and Tom PROMISED he would delete these before the site goes public, here's a few pics of the engraveing on my current project.

Cody: Most excellent work..... If I could have wielded an engraving tool like that I could have been somebody ( yeah I keep dreaming) Wow now the  Cheekpiece too!
I need to do a fancy silver eagle on a cheekpiece of this bullet gun I'm finishing  If I could only get it a 10th as good

The work is beautiful

I hear that Cody does engraving work, and does it cheap.

Kuntz may have very well sent out his engraving work.....there may have been a time when Rupp used the same engraver...

Was Tetachuk his name?

This is most exciting work, Cody, all fun aside. You have a serious good hand and eye with the engraver. Few people could do Kuntz like you are doing. You got the touch, bro.

Cody,
I'm also eyeing up your incised carvings....they are very well executed also! I was telling Acer awhile back I can't do incised carving to save my life. Relief carving.. no problem. He said I need to sharpen my vee tools & that's scary. I have done it but never as sharp as I need to do that nice deep( & clean) stuff you guys do.

Hey now I also see his picture is bigger then mine! I thought he was taller?

man, you must have some time on your hands.  Beautiful work.  We have a new Canadian Lehigh school, eh?

So you engrave before finishing.  Would not have thought of that.

Rich, you would not believe how Cody builds a gun........maybe I should let him tell you.

Oh, I can't, now that I let the secret out.

He leaves the forestock square, and finishes the gun from the locks back. You might say 'WHA?' But think about it: you have a great way to hold the gun in a vise without endangering the forestock. The forestock is safe from all those dings and dents you get when turning the gun around.

Well the pictures sure add proof to your story!!  ;) ;) ::)

Cody that engraving is phenomenal. I am engraving my Peter Berry now ( and learning how to engrave) Everytime  I get ready to work I get my .54 down and study the engraving you did on the sideplate for me....... I have a long way to go!!  Those cold winters with nothing to do but practice have sured paid off for you!!!  ::)

Just to show that Tom aint chittin ya (for once), here's a picture of the gun so far. Haven't even done the front of the panels yet. I don't like trying to hold the delicate forestock in a vice so I leave it to last.

Jim, try this, rather than useing a V parting tool, I use a VERY small veiner. Here's a picture of the one I use most. It's the smallest one Phiel makes. Even though it's a palm chisel, I drive it with a mallet. Problem with a V parting tool (at least for me) is that unless your depth is perfevtly consistent, the width of the line will vary and appear wavy. The veiner has parralel sides so once you reach enough depth to ride on the vertical sides, variations will not result in a varied line width. After cutting my design, I then go back and vary the line where I want to with a small flat. Here's an early picture of the carving on this gun, all incised. I did use a Vparting tool for the cross hatching for no particular reason, just seemed like the thing to do. :-\

Tim, I did a few practice plates when I was learning to use a 120 deg graver but otherwise, I never practice. I have time just lack the ambition.

You make me sick, Cody. I wish we had a vomit button on the new forum. Wralph!

Good idee on the veiner. Perhaps easier to sharpen that the parting tool, eh. The trick with the parting tool is that it's actually a teenie weenie veiner down at the bottom of the vee....no company that I know of gets that bottom of the vee perfectly sharp inside cornered.

Most cool aft the cheek carving.

You need to downsize your photos a tad. Maybe make the around 100 to 12o KB, no bigger.

Cody, is this.5 mm veiner what you use??

PFEIL "Swiss Made" #11 Sweep Veiners
These gouges are more 'U' shaped than any other sweep. They are well suited to fluting and preliminary outlining of relief carvings. Their shape allows them to make a clean, deep cut in one pass without fear of the corners of the tool digging in.

Tim, yeah, I think that's the one.
Jim, here's some pics of the graver tip and chisel tip. Couldn't get the chisel tip very well. The graver on the right is a 120degree and the one on the left is a typical 90 degree (square)

You guys will notice that the same elements  seen in the carving are carried through to the patch box design as well as the engraveing. This is an example of "conceptual continuity", maintaining a common theme throughout the gun. Another example of this would be.....I dunno.....something like a modeled acanthus leaf on a rear sight executed in the same manner as that on a butt plate and trigger guard....wzzzzzz.....kaplook! ;D

Cody,
Thanks for posting the photos. I think I may have one of those 120 deg gravers here. Tom is taking a peak at what I think may be a veiner I have here.
Sorry If sometimes I disappear for awhile. At times my darn profession gets in the way of life. Was at meetings all morning now I have to shoot in the studio for the rest of the day. Yesterday I got a chance to hide behind the computer all day and play on this new list! That was fun, now it's back to work!

Cody,
She's a beauty!!  The engraving and carving are outstanding, but I also wanted to say that the architecture looks spot on!   I don't know if I mentioned it before, but I like your use of steel nails for the silver inlay.  Way to go!

Went into the Admin section for the photos, Ken, and made the max width at 640.

Now Cody's wide gun photos have disappeared.

Since we are just starting up, I'll ask Cody to repost at 640 wide or smaller. Cody, you wanted these gone at some point, anyway, right? I didn't mean to do it so soon. hahaha.

When the tutorial for photos gets redone, this specified max width will be part of the instructions. Jim Filipski said he would help me with the camera jargon.

Now I gotta go outside and play in the garden.

I figured it would take some playing around to get the just so so size.  640 seems small to me.  800 x 600 might be better.  Small document size.

This 640 x 480.  I think Photobucket resizes to this.

Ken, is that a 640 wide pic?

Seems to have plenty good size and detail.

I am sure there are plenty of folks who don't have a wide screen.
