Thank you Michael. For a silversmith, John sure could build a rifle! I have wondered if some of the work on John Vogler's rifles was done by others in the extended family, though obviously the metalwork would have been his forte.

That side opening box is nifty, and I appreciate the photos. Not the "normal" finial either. I am wondering how that sideplate button patchbox mechanism works. I cannot visualize the standard Vogler release working in that location.

John Vogler trained to be a gun smith under his uncle several years before he went to Pennsylvania to train as a silversmith. He was in my opinion the most talented man in Salem.

The serpent quote is based on Genesis 3:15. I believe the Nathaniel Vogler rifle was engraved by his cousin John Vogler, the outstanding gun smith and silver-smith in Salem.

Just incredible. Thank you for sharing the pictures of the spoons, and displaying an example of the outstanding craftsmanship of Nathniel's Cousin, John Volger. Are those spoons on display in MESDA?

Those five John Vogler eagle back spoons are part of my Piedmont North Carolina decorative arts collection.

MESDA has a new Moravian decorative arts display open currently. It features furniture, art, Longrifles, silver by John Vogler, and pottery. You should try to see it while it is open.

John Vogler' s house is open for touring in Old Salem. You can see a lot of his silver there too.

Are you coming March 10th?

Yes sir, I'm planning on coming March 10th. It's been a few years since I've made it up to MESDA, I'm overdue for a visit. The last time I visited MESDA, several years ago now, Blake was kind enough to give me a tour and show me some of the long rifles that were in storage at that point. It was exceptionally generous of Blake, he is a Salt Of The Earth kind of guy.

I'm looking forward to the event.

There is a reason both the Vogler rifles and spoons feature Eagles. We plan to reveal it in the book. Here is a Christoph Vogler Eagle.

George Vogler Eagle Patchbox. He was born in Friedland in 1789. He trained to be a gun smith with his uncle Christoph Vogler in Salem in 1806. He married the daughter of Rowan gun smith Henry Bruner, II [Mary] in 1815 and moved to Salisbury. He made Salem School rifles in Rowan County for many years along with furniture and carved tombstones.

Mike, I should have asked this earlier: do you know if any daybooks, or inventories, or customer lists, for the Salem gunshop for the eighteenth or early nineteenth centuries survive in the Moravian Archives, Southern Province? Are there documents that would enable us to get a sense of the sorts of work these gunmakers were undertaking (repair v. new rifles), the size of their production, and the range of their customers?

This rifle by George Vogler has an Eagle side-plate. The boys rifle made by his brother John Vogler for his son Elias features a similar Eagle side-plate.
