Another bag out the door today
« on: January 26, 2018, 07:38:17 PM »
A completed stuffed, clamshell shaped bag. Hand stitched in linen cord at 10 to the inch. I use pricking irons (not punch thru pricking chisels) and sew by juggling two needles and sharp awl in hand. The handmade brass buckle is of brass with a temper blued iron tongue . It is set to be worn across the chest, being reminiscent of the baldric style. The pouch is constructed of vegetable tanned horsehide and  is used in double thickness so as to create"pouches" or veins for stuffing tow for form. It has an internal divider so as to separate shot from ball as is written about in more than one 18th century account. An original bulbous hollow button was used on this construction.

That's beautiful workmanship!  Very inspiring.

Just read how to do the pricking juggling stitching method in a book by Valerie Michael.  I'm going to give it a go but need to get a stitching pony (she calls it a clam).

I am thinking of a few words.  Let me see..... "exquisite, elegant, well crafted".  Those are a good start.

Is that one black, or a very dark version of brown?  I like it all.  The stitching looks super on the finish.  It really pops.

I am guessing the body is lined and has padding to fill out the "shell" motif?

Oh yes, another special buckle.  I like it very much.

Thank you for the eye-candy good sir.  Best wishes, and God Bless,   Marc

Thank you. Yes I use a  self sprung clam instead of a pony as well.

Thanks Marc,

I used ferric acetate on the leather.  It turned kind of a black  brown.

Another gem, James!  Those early bags are really nifty.  Any ideas on locations where this style was made and latest approximate time frame?  Such an attractive design!

This is basically my design based an a smaller bandolier pouch that had that tufted look. The tow stuffed style is reminiscent of early saddle work. The buckle is based on 17th century examples.

Very Nice Work!! I did some leather work years ago, nothing on this level of coarse. Most people have no idea how much WORK it is. To do work of this level is truly the mark of a real craftsman. Thanks for showing us!   Nate
