Question for Tim Crosby
« on: February 18, 2018, 10:37:17 PM »
Mr. Crosby, I know many of your horns involve threaded components. Have you experimented with trying coarse versus fine threads in the same diameter to see which produced the best quality of threads in the soft materials of horn and wood? For example, 5/8-11 versus 5/8-18.
I would generally think of coarse threads with horn and antler and such, but it occurred to me that as a fine thread removes less material, it might actually produce a better quality cut.

I do use NC, 5/8-11 and 1/2-13. Tried 9/16-12 for awhile but just gravitated back to the 5/8s. I never tried the fine thread, I just figured it would be to hard to get smooth clean cuts in the horn. You are cutting cross grain and it has a tendency to tear or chip. Taps and dies cut much better when new, sounds like it doesn't have to be said but even horn will dull them.
Most original horns you see will have even coarser threads. Hope that helped.
