Anyone do much small game hunting? I'm wanting to do a little rabbit hunting and just curious how many others have done this.

That's about all's I've been hunting for the past couple years, with the exception of a little dog-calling. Am starting to get a little stove-up for hiking the ridges for muleys and elk anymore; don't have enough trees here in NoNV to have much of a squirrel population, so, it's cottons for the pot, or jacks for the challenge.

Don't have a camera that'll hold a civil conversation with The Bride's laptop, so, no evidence photos.

Hood I took up squirrel hunting 35 years ago with a 32 cal Tenn rifle that i built, then a 36 and then had to try a 40 and i like all of them.My favorite time is when their cuttin hickory,s and oaks right after a good hard rain cause they will be out and you can slip right up close to the tree their in if you move slow and easy.Small game hunting will teach you the in,s and out,s of a flintlock or cap lock faster than deer hunting will too . Good dogs make a fun also but I like the peace and quiet my self. Curt

20 gauge smooth rifle or Centermark Tule FDC loaded with an ounce of #5 shot in a paper shot cup for squirrels. I hunt more squirrels than rabbits, deliberately (I'll take a rabbit as a target of opportunity), as I like the meat better, and they are easier for me to spot. Rabbits I often won't see unless they move, squirrels I can listen for and move in on the sound, then have an easier time spotting them in a tree than seeing a rabbit sitting still in the brush.

Both squirrel and rabbit with my .32

I'm better at taking squirrel. But both species present unique challenges.

I will take squirrel now and then, haven't shot a rabbit since fever went threw the area.
Got a 36 that is a tack driver.

Used to hunt squirrels and rabbits with a .32 flint gun. No time any more, lucky to get out once or twice a year. My wife gets all our rabbit now with a .22 out the window....still tastes the same...

Pic from a few years back, .32 Caplock. Been out twice this year with the .40. Two shots, two misses. Both of those bunnies let me seat the next shot before hopping off into the brush. Could swear I heard laughing! It seems the population is down a bit this year. They say the rabbits cycle but with all the coyotes around you wouldn't think so. Course a coyote will eat plenty of other stuff!

Rabbits would be fun with a muzzleloader, but they have a disease here. So, it's just big game for me.

BP rabbit hunting is fun. I use an original 12 ga double, percussion, heavy barrels. I always kept a few beagles that would run a rabbit until recently. Predator numbers are up and they're farming every square foot nowadays, so habitats is being planted. I won't get into the effects of outfitters and leasing. But, squirrel hunting is still pretty good, and coon. I use .30 and .32 on squirrel and I think I'll make a short barrel .36 for coons sometime, probably an Ohio/Indiana style. Fox squirrels sit good for headshots with a good cur dog under them.

Kinda funny story on this one. We were at a rendezvous and left our camp to go to the camp meeting. When I got back, I saw this fella up on a limb, but didn't have a gun. So I yelled for a buddy to load up his smoothbore. Well he did it in a hurry (which in hindsight was a bad idea), because must've doubled up on the shot amount. Dang thing almost knocked me to the ground.

Never have had a fresher squirrel though. From woods to plate in 15 minutes.

Squirrels are my favorite hunting pastime. This year I have used a .32 cal. underhammer by Rodney Olsen, an original .27 cal. by J. Young (WV), and an original combination gun in .29 cal. X 24 gauge. They've all worked well and I'm up to about 83 harvested so far. The season here (Florida) extends until the first part of March. Last year, I shot this squirrel out and while he was still moving around on the ground and making noise a raccoon and her baby came up and ate my squirrel while I was reloading. I guess it was hard times. They didn't seem to mind me being there. James Levy

ALL the rabbits and a few of the squirrels I've killed were taken with a pellet rifle. I do not like using a shotgun for them and never had good luck any time I shot them with scatter pills. I do like using a small bore rifle, a .32 or .36 for squirrels. I don't care to use anything larger.

Don't get to squirrel hunt much nowadays but have always loved the squirrel woods from the time I was just a kid.

I would love to squirrel hunt with a long, lean, .36 flintlock rifle, with a patchbox, and no deep crescent butt plate. But,,,,, I don't have one. So I work with what I have...

I believe that is what went threw here some years back, the rabbit population has not made a very good recovery yet.
