Show me your squirrel rifle
« on: February 20, 2018, 06:49:24 AM »
Here is copy of a  Charley Bean rifle I built a few years ago for Tim Cosby. The original rifle is owned by Jerry Nobel. Jerry allowed me to photograph it and take measurements. Many thanks to Jerry. I believe that Tim has the rifle dailed in, that is a good looking mess of squirrels.

Man!  All these fine squirrel rifles keep showing up, and I’ve got a couple of .50 caliber barrels in the shop.  My “to do” list just keeps gettin’ longer and longer...

Almost as nice as the .40 cal Southern Mountain Rifle you built for me back in 2007. Has it really been that long ago? Beautiful work Jim.

Here’s a .32 I copied (loosely) from the .29 cal. Gun below.  The gun was given to my dad in the early 1950’s, and was said to have been built in Kentucky in the late 1800’s by an old guy who examined it at that time.

This is a 32 that I built for my wife many years ago. Now I’m trying to build 2 more so our kids don’t fight over who gets it🤨

I haven't hunted a squirrel since I was a teenager (back in the Paleozoic period), but I made a copy of one of Jim Chambers' beautiful rifle except his was a .54 and I had a .36 barrel on the shelf.  This is the smallest caliber rifle I have built and I love it for its very slim lines.  So, based on its caliber, I suppose it is a "squirrel rifle". I was so impressed with the caliber that I bought two more barrels in .36 to make up into nice slender rifles......

Looking good there fellas.

Hitting the woods with a squirrel gun is about as close to heaven as I've ever been.

I hope this is ok to post.
I bought a 20 gauge  from Tip Curtis. I bought it for skwirls only. I can shoot this up into the trees. I couldn't with my rifle, worried about where the ball came down.
But,
It's a beautiful gun.  Mr. Curtis does amazing work.

It's also pretty effective.

The trigger is a dream. I wish my other rifles had such a good trigger.

Some lovely squirrel killers.

Jim Parker, I really like that "architecture" rifle.  Without adornments, the shaping has to carry everything.  I am sure Mr Cosby is thrilled to own it.  I would be.

God bless,  Marc

Davec2, that's an amazing gun. Tastefully done, clean, and beautiful without being overly done. It's the gun in my mind's eye that my hands will never be capable of.

What's the dark material at the bottom of the cheek rest? Is the wood dyed darker? It almost looks like a piece of horn.

Jeff,

Thanks for the kind words.  The explanation of the cheek piece and the whole build is explained here:
