Installing beech plug help
« on: February 24, 2018, 06:27:00 PM »
Tried search first but not working for me.

I have a 20 year old but new Green Mountain barrel in 40 cal. that I'm installing a breech plug.

The plug over clocks by one land (based on the makers mark on bottom of barrel) and seats on the outside  shoulder of the barrel but does not seat/seal the breech at the rifling. I would like it to seat/seal on the flat opposite the makers mark like it's suppose to be but can't figure out (I think I know enough to get in trouble) which I should start filing on the plug or the barrel to back it up to the flat it's suppose to be on.

I read the barrel makers put the mark on the flat with the least amount of run out so windage wouldn't be at a minimal.

I do appreciate the help. My first rifle is almost finished and hopefully Ill be able post pics next week. Yep, jumping out of one frying pan into another. ;D

See Tutorials, Metal Shaping, Herb's post of July 07, 2010, "Fitting a Hawken Breech Plug by Hand".  This will work for any plug.
