Netting Club Butt Fowler
« on: March 23, 2018, 03:06:48 AM »
A few weeks ago I was having a few beers while browsing an online auction site (often a dangerous combination) and became the new owner of a Ken Netting Club Butt Dog Lock Fowler (No. 387). It has a 60" long barrel and appears to be a 20 gauge. I'm trying to figure out what region (New England or Hudson Valley?) and time period (late 17th or early 18th century maybe?) it might have been made to represent. Any assistance in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

Not a club butt fowler. Hudson Valley Fowler, early 1700's. Club butt fowlers and Hudson Valley Fowlers are very different guns. The standard reference these days is Flintlock Fowlers: The First Guns Made in America by Tom Grinslade. Take a look and you'll see the difference.

Is this the same gun?

Thanks - I’ll have to get that book. Not the same gun, but very similar. Mine has a round barrel.

I'd say HVF and meant to date the first quarter of the 1700s. Beautiful Fowler
