Changing a Lyman GPR from flint to percussion
« on: March 07, 2018, 09:33:53 PM »
I have a Lyman GPR in .54 flint, but also I have a  L&R rpl lock.
I would like to convert from flint to percussion.
Any tips would be appreciated very much.
I have most every thing needed to make the conversion, but I thought I would ask here, before I proceed.
I have the lock, big chisel and a big hammer.
I am patiently waiting.  ;D

Sell or trade the flintlock gun and buy a percussion gun instead.

Big chisel, small chisel - no matter. The big hammer is the important tool.

Don't leave home without it.

I wanted to do the same thing but was afraid I would botch the job up so I decided to get a mule ear lock.  Now I can switch between flint and percussion just by changing the lock and switching the nipple for the touch hole liner.  Has worked great for me, especially when I could not get any real black powder for some time.

I changed one once to percussion.  I re-drilled the touch hole liner and tapped it to 5/16ths x 24 and installed a drum. I used one of those blank drums that you tighten in and drill for a nipple but if you are lucky a regular drum will index ok.  Instead of buying an RPL I sawed off the pan like they did in the olden days and hogged out a half moon with a round file.  I then needed a percussion hammer with the proper throw.  Seems an L&R hammer for a Leman lock worked perfect.  Even though I still had the patent type breech it fired super reliable.  I don't ever remember a misfire.
