New Rifle on it's way
« on: March 19, 2018, 03:59:24 AM »
Just got pictures this weekend - the rifle will be boxed up and on it's way to me tomorrow.  Mike Davis is the builder, it is a Virginia style rifle - premium curly maple - Charles Burton (FCI) barrel 50 caliber - 42 inches (corrected from 44 inches) - forged butt plate, forged trigger guard, Davis trigger, L&R Durs Egg lock - poured pewter nose cap.  Can't wait to get to the range and put some balls down range.

Man, that’s a beauty, congrats!  I love those iron mounted rifles...got a couple on my current build list.

Looks like the one offered on the CLA live auction in 2016.  Was very interested but the LOP was just too short for "him".

It is pretty much like the CLA rifle of 2016 auction. A little better stock and not as dark finished - actually had him finish as a "new rifle" I believe he used the antique finish on the CLA rifle. I asked for the patchbox and the silver edelweiss flower just like the CLA rifle.  I wanted the curl to really show and when the stock is antiqued it is sometimes a little too dark for me.

Looked back on my order for the barrel (FCI barrel) it is a .50 cal - 42 inch "C" weight barrel swamped. 1 in 66" round bottom rifling.
Good thing I keep the emails. LOL!

Nice comfortable looking rifle to shot, Don - well done.
Taylor's Virginy rifle is a "C" weight - what a wonderful offhand rifle indeed.

Gorgeous rifle!
Out of curiosity, how long was your wait? He is building me a tribute rifle for an ancestor in .54 based on his Old Virginia style. The anticipation is killing me!

MAB7 answered your question via pm.  Daryl - I'm hoping the "C" weight will be better to hold on target.  That "A" weight .40 that I have sure likes to dance around on me.  On a bench it's very accurate - but after several shots during the league the mirage starts and I find I need a little more weight out front to hold it steady.

Took the rifle out for the first time - nice and warm but the wind was something else  - I think I have the 25 yd load  but the 50 yard range I tried 4 shots but the wind was just too much and more open than or 25 yard range.

I was able to take it to the 50 yard range today and I think I have it pretty close.  Just wished my eyesight was better (wrinkle in my macula that distorts my vision) Especially at longer distances past 25 yds.  I did use 3F this time - 70 grains.  Forgot to take the .020 patches but did have the .018 patches with me.  Mr. Flintlock lube.  The shot to the right was my fault.  I knew it as soon as I pulled the trigger. I'm going to need to get me some clear shooting glasses - bronze just doesn't cut it on a sunny day.

Whoa, now; that 50yd target is fine.  It has to be a very good day for me to get such groups.
