I remember making a pair of locks for Tom from English castings he sent
to me.Are these the locks? I remember being very dissatisfied with them
after putting in a lot of work on them.
He also built another double rifle using a magnificent pair of French locks
he bought at Friendship in the Fall of 1970 (maybe). That evening while we
we all waiting for Helen to get the steaks ready a man came into the camp
and wanted to know if the man who bought those fine locks was there.
Tom told him he indeed had bought them. The man asked if he wanted to
sell them because he had been trying to get them at a reduced price earlier
that day.Tom told him that when you find that kind of quality and workmanship
that was unused that wheedling over the cost was foolish and he bought them
on the spot.Helen said dinner was done but the man kept on trying to buy them
and then Homer Shafer spoke up and told him he was being a PITA and to get
out of the camp.
Thanks for reviving a long dormant memory.

I was up in the late Roy Gerbsch's attic in Danville Ill. about 20 years ago and got to handle a couple of your Grand Pap's gun's. One was a Hawken and the other was an English rifle if I recall correctly. Both VERY nice guns.

Yes indeed - isn't that lovely - and of decent bore size as well - most fitting - 14 bore by any chance, Mark?
Thank you for posting this rifle.

I see only one trigger which brings back another memory on one of the locks.
It had a tumbler bearing that was much longer than normal and Tom had me mill
a small square on it and the drill and tap it for a 2x64 pan head screw.I recall
him saying he was making a modification of an old Holland&Holland Patent for
a selective single trigger on a double gun.Maybe this is it......maybe.
Can we see the other 2 double rifles?

Bob, my aunt has the percussion double i I can get pictures of it easily enough, just have to catch her at home which won't be hard it's about a 10 mile trip. The third double I have is also mine but it is a cartridge gun and I know I can't post it here. In the over the back fence section maybe???? Moderators?

Mark;
I'm sure I must have seen and handled that rifle on one of my visits to Tom's basement.  It is a real treat to see it again so many years later.  Thanks for posting these pictures.

Hi Mark,

First, thanks for posting your grandfather's double rifle.  Wonderful piece.

I'm sure many here, myself included, would love to see the cartridge double, but ALR rules do not allow it, even in OTBF.

I wonder where the barrels came from - .56" (or very  close)
my list shows .557" for 27 bore.

I was visiting Tom right before election day of 1976 and saw 2 Bill Large round
blanks that were 58 caliber. I would say these are now a major part of that rifle.
Tom had just bought an old Atlas 10F lathe and was going to use it to contour
those barrels. He also got Hardinge spin fixture in that purchase and thought
it was part of the lathe and I showed him what it was really for and that there
was no place on the lathe for it. He asked me if I could use it in my shop and I
told him I could and asked him what he wanted for it.It was a costly tool even in
1976 but he said he couldn't use it so he gave it to me.I still have it and have used
its indexing capabilities to make reamers. It is designed for use on a milling machine
and I sent him a picture of it mounted on my mill.

I do know that one set was a pair of Douglas octagon barrels that he turned round.

Bob, his old lathe is in my shop and still turning out parts and pieces. I took it clear down completely apart a  year ago and rebuilt it. Going strong. However I have been considering taking it back apart to take the ways into work and surface grind them. But I can't decide, I would have to shim back up if I did.

Mark,
Does that lathe have babbit bearings or the tapered Timkens? My old 10F is from
1934 and I traded a Hawken lock for it in 1974. It's a 10x36.It's babbit and my
12x36 is from 1943 and has Timkens.I bought it in 1958 from the original owner.
To check the head and tail stock alignment on these or an other lathe, use 2 new
dead centers,a #2 Morse in the tail stock and a #3 Morse taper in the head stock
spindle.Make sure both tapered holes are CLEAN and then insert the centers and
slide the tail stock until the points of the centers touch.Chances are they will not
and even new ones were off vertically as much as .008. if it gives repeated accuracy
in turning at a predetermined setting I would do nothing to it.Parts are still available from
the Clausing Corp in Kalamazoo,Michigan.

Bob, it has timken bearings. Sometimes wish I had a taper attachment for it but I get by.

The locks on the gun shown ARE the locks Tom bought at Friendship all
those years ago. I made a pair from some castings from Dixie and was
NOT a bit happy with them but Tom Thought they were OK.
