seeing your lathe, i am surprised you are not making the breech out of one piece of metal. either route is a fair amount of work, the snail in particular. i am just finishing up my hawken pistol build that seemed to go on for months. i really enjoy seeing people fabricate their parts.

I must say that I am anxiously awaiting watching you fabricate the breech and snail. I've been drawing me up one based on the earlier style that seams to not be offered.

Runastav - you sure are good with your lath, files, "get it done" attitude and techniques when fabricating parts for a build. It is a joy to me when you post about your projects. I always learn interesting things watching your progress.

I can see you used the through bolt method that I am considering. Did you do anything to make the bolt permanent to the snail breach?

There's nothing like the satisfaction that comes from success at this kind of work!  And so much faster than waiting for a casting from a supplier.  I'm going to be interested in how you treat the front of the snail.  I'm going to resend you some images of the J & S Hawken pair...

...and I think I'll post it here as a reference piece.  The difference is that the original J & S Hawken pistol pair have very large barrels (for pistols) with .65 cal bores.

In this image, note how the lock plate forward of the snail is rounded over, up to the barrel, and the lock panel begins about 3/8" forward of the plate.  Also, the hammer rests on the nipple at an angle less than 90 deg.  I assume the cup's floor is cut to match the nipple at 90 degrees.

Nice work. Is that the smaller L&R lock I told you about a couple of months ago? Now I need to go examine mine to see if my hammer is that tall.

Did Hawkens normally have a clean out screw on the off side? Would make making the breech easier.

You’re a really ingenious and efficient problem-solver.  Plus unafraid to take on anything. This is another great tutorial.  Thanks!

Being unable to get a simple part from the USA says little for the
American suppliers. I have milled a number of these in years long
gone when helping Bill Large.
I have never seen a clean out screw on an antique but on upper
end English guns they have been found by using X ray. On the
Alex Henry breech of Don Brown's antique it was plain to see and
they were drilled all the way across and below the center line of the bore'
It appeared that the screw was probably peened, filed, polished and then
engraved with the rest of the breech. The so called "blow out plug"
was a thin platinum disc over another screw in the bolster.
These breech plugs were designed so little pressure was on the
nipple base and the platinum was only decorative.
Runar's clever system to bypass the problem proves the idea that
the fewer outside suppliers involved with such a project is  better.
Keep up the good work.

Hello again Runar, your work is always very interesting. Your ability to take a lump of steel, and make it into a three dimensional rose, is amazing.
To all who watch the building of this pistol see that anything is possible, if someone made it before.
Please continue your  piece and let us marvel. :)
Thank you for sharing with us your very fine work.
Best regards!
