Yes - out of the stock. We do that with all guns. Pins or wedges, does not matter. Only a SMALL amount of care is needed, but it is best to do this

before too much beer flows.

If there is a crud ring, I push a wet patch all the way down and let it stay there a few minutes.  Crud ring comes right out without using force.  Mostly there is no crud ring formed.

 A dealer I used to work for manufactured tapered jags. They had a max diameter at the tip and tapered to accommodate the larger diameter of the bunched up bulkier patch  further back. They work well and clean to the breach well and are less likely to get stuck. Unfortunately, they no longer make them, but you can modify a jag easily
