I am surprised to see how few examples of old ones are on the net, and how pricey the few that have sold went for.

Mostly the survival rate on these are small, because wood, horn, or antler, all are susceptible to critter damage. I Had one years ago from Alaska shaped like a seal that was made from walrus ivory. It had been handled so much that it looked like it had been dipped in reddish brown stain and then polished.
