Another Long Rifle Chest

 Here is another Long Rifle chest, it is sittin up on a couple of stools for the pics.. Over all it is 69 1/2 X 18 3/4", inside it is 68 1/2 X 16 1/2", it is 17 1/4" tall. The lock is a half mortise, the escutcheon for the key is a hunters star, the hinges are home made. It has a 23 3/4 X 16 1/4 X 4 1/2" drawer. In the third pic you can see the pins that lock the drawer in, they are turned horn with a steel pin. The pulls are made from a couple of steel rings and attached with cotter keys. The top and corners are covered with leather and edged with brass tacks.

Personally I like it just as it stands .

Tim, excellent work and design.  I really like the leather accent on the corners and use on the rifle cradles.

What type of wood is that ? Pine?

Tim,  Thanks for sharing the photograph and dimensions.  I really like the leather accents.  I thought last winter I was going to get around to making a chest but did not get moved into my new shop.  I am definately going to have to make a longrifle chest as a winter project this year.  Maybe I can get the hinges forged this summer.  I like everything about it.DMR

 It is white pine. I have had a hard time finding good pine of any kind.

they're nice chests Tim, if i can find some heart pine locally, I'd like to try one.  there was a guy around here who dismantled barns and old factories who may have some, but it will be interesting to get a price.

Tim,

Very nice!  I'd just keep it how it is and not age it.  But then again it would also look great with an aged look.  Very nice either way!

How did you fasten the bottom to the sides? I am thinking about making one myself, and am not sure how to go about that part.

 The base is made as one piece. In each corner there is a support block that is about 1/2" shorter than the base itself. The blocks also help to strengthen corners. The case sits down in the base on the corner blocks and is nailed to the base. Hope this helps.
