Funny thing, Dennis- the X is not  in the middle of that read X-ring.

I ran off a few of them. I measure the 10 ring as 1.927", using an optivisor for a closer look.

Looks good to me, but would not be able to shoot that further than about 25 yards.  4" dia. bull is

about my minimum for 50" shooting.

I will shoot the target I linked to on Thursday. That is if the weather permits. Little Joe and I are hoping to have a range day before I go back to AZ. I will shoot it at 25 & 50 yards.

I printed off a bunch too...will get out and shoot it next week.  Are we scoring 'half ball' for high score, or just touching the ring?

I'd need a 'bud' of about 4" to shoot this target at 50 meters.  Is that allowed, or is this a seeing competition rather than a shooting one?

Please explain a "bud" of about four inches.
I have no problem with either scoring method. NRA scoring would be simpler.

Your scoring should be half ball in, as touching a ring gives a big bore  the advantage.

Little Joe is right, score with the center of the ball.

Way back when I was shooting at crossed straws, edge of playing cards or a split the ball, I was using a .40cal. rifle. The guy's would tell me to upgrade to a .50 or .54 I told them if they would shoot with the center of the ball instead of the outside edge they would be better shots!

The 'bud' Taylor is talking about, is an aiming circle, or bullseye, overlaying the target somewhere to allow better vision.

A 'bud' is a disc of black paper pinned over the bull to give a better aiming point.  They are almost always used in chunk, plank, and table shoots.  The idea is to place your bud so that your shots go through the centre of the bull, no matter how your rifle is sighted.  In fact, shooters deliberately sight their rifles to hit in another place other than their aiming point, so that their aiming point does not deteriorate during the match.  That is not my concern in the case of this ALR postal match...just to give me a sight picture that I can see at 50 meters.

Taylor I just had never heard a spotter called a "bud" before. Maybe its a Canadian thing.
However I am confused. The target that I linked to has a 4&3/4 inch black. If you put a 4"  bud" over it, it isn't going to help you any.
As far as I'm concerned if you want to put a 12" "bud" over it, is fine with me.

The scoring rings on the link you posted. alacran, are not the same as the one Dennis posted.  The 10 rings are very close,

but the 9 through 5 are almost twice as wide as the 9 through 6 rings on the target Dennis posted.

If we all do not shoot the same target, this 'contest' is meaningless.

Have we settled on a target yet?  I'm fine with all that have been offered up so far.  Let's pick one decide on distance and start shooting.

I printed out the target that Dennis posted and think it would be fine at 25 yards.
I shot the one I posted at both25 & 50 yards. I think it is acceptable for both 25 & 50 yards. However I like the one Dennis posted better for 25 yds. I wish I had printed one out before I went to the range.
I agree with longcruise lets pick something.
I vote for the one that Dennis posted at 25yards. I prefer the one I posted for 50 yards.
I suggest I/2 ball in the ring for score. 5 shot practice warm up on different target. Then shoot for score

Where is Justin?  C'mon you started this so go ahead and make the decisions and lay down the rules.  It's all good fun, we just need to be on the same page.

Sorry guys. I have been off the grid for a bit. I am personally not the biggest fan of shooting regular bull targets. I prefer something with more fun to it. Like the bear target, a red coat target, poker target, the nightmare, etc..   Poking holes in circles is okay, but that's what every other shooting discipline does too.  It's just my two cents on it.

We don't care what the target is...just want you to tell us one we can all print, and we'll get to it.

I would say that we go with the one Dennis posted for this month, and I'll find another for next week.

I had a bit "free" time on the farm today so I shot the ALR postal shoot.
a couple practice shots
25 yds.
5 shots
40 cal. flint
open iron sights (rear sight adjustable Micro sight)
target suggested by Dennis
I hope this is what we are supposed to do. If your looking for different 25 yd targets I have plenty of unique targets just say the word.         Steve

I think what Steve did is perfect for our first one. 25 yards with 5 shots on target for score.  I would start a new thread on here where we can all post our targets. I would say we set the deadline for August 1st. Next month we will have more time to get better organized.

Looks like Steve won't be able to compete next month. The corn will be too high.
