New hunting season in West Virginia
« on: July 13, 2018, 02:52:21 AM »
Every year our state dept. of natural resources sends our gun club (Mountaineer Flintlock Rifles) a questionnaire detailing all the proposed changes to hunting seasons and regulations and asks for our input. As corresponding secretary the job falls to me to complete and return the form. There is an area in the form seeking suggestions and last year I wtote a lengthy letter suggesting a special season for traditional weapons , i e traditional flintlock or sidelock percussion and long or recurve bows only. Well lo and behold we have a new 4 day season in Jan. called the “Mountaineer Heritage Season” dedicated to traditional muzzleloaders, longbows and recurves.
They didn’t accept my suggestion however to wave the blaze orange requirement, but its a start. Might spark some more interest in the traditional stuff, who knows?

I think that's awesome. You never know what something like that could do for our hobby.

Now that you have it ,,all hunters need to stay united and support one another,or the anti's will unite to close it down.

Won't the bears be asleep in the dens in January?

David R way back when in Michigan that's how our season started. Then to sell more licenses. They started allowing scopes, sabots, an you know guns to the season. Took the fun right out of it.
Hopefully your state will continue to honor this new season for a long time...!

Oldtraveler, we do already have a muzzleloading season in December that has gone that way with the inlines and scopes etc.,. This new season is aimed at going back to be more traditional and states you must use a traditional side lock, flint or percussion. I would still like to see them remove the blaze orange law for it though so we could do some period hunts.

So far, Pa. has been hanging true to our after Christmas Primitive Flintlock Season, so far !!! Been a few changes, Peep Sights and use of Maxi-Balls etc, but the In-Line crowd has been kept at Bay. To be honest, I am seeing more and more Hunters participating in this Season than ever before.

There is a huge refuge (Wheeler Refuge, 35K acres) near Huntsville Al that has always limited deer hunting to flintlocks and any kind of bows. Access is walk-in or by boat so I haven't ever hunted there because I don't know the access points plus it is an hour drive away.

Our deer season in NC typically ends on January 1st (for most, if not all, regions, I believe) so it's usually a few weeks after that before the deer calm down.   By early December, the deer are so spooked that unless you are on low-pressure private land where they haven't been hunted hard all season, it can be tough to get a bead on one.

Our archery season starts mid-September, and then we have about 1 or 2 weeks in October for muzzleloading-only before the regular rifle season starts.
If it was easy, everyone would do it.

I used to hunt WV in wetzel county every year for black powder season.  It made PA look bad with the number of deer we saw.  Used only flintlock but most of the locals I ran into had the in lines.  A few would have a sidekick percussion but not many.  The thing i liked about it, u didn't see many hunters in the woods.

I hope Kentucky will do the same someday.  You all are very fortunate, even if you have to wear a blaze orange hunters frock :)
