Original flintlock southern rifle
« on: July 24, 2018, 11:48:39 PM »
This is an interesting rifle from my collection.  I found it in Houston many years ago.  Anyone care to take a stab at what region is was built?  I really like the trigger guard.  I will be making a mold from that guard and have the parts cast in the future.

Looks like good huntin' rifle. The puzzle piece barrel tang is weird and pleasing to my eye at the same time.  .

Was/Is there a buttplate?

Interesting rifle. I'm sorry I can't add anything regarding its identity.

I think I'd call that one "Uvula".   ;D

Thanks for posting. I like learning all I can every time I can, so I'm mostly here for the "ride" to see all the various opinions on the gun.

Very nice! I do like the trigger guard & the "puzzle piece" tang also -- when you get around making the castings, I would be interested in a copy of that trigger guard!

Now I'm going to sit back & listen to the opinions!

The quality of the triggerguard, and the fit, and finish, of the gun in general, points to a fine craftsman. Likely this was the entry level rifle made by a known gunsmith. The long comb, and short wrist, along with the fabulous triggerguard, have a North Carolina feel to me. Probably somewhere near the center of the state.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Looks N.C. To me, also. Fine looking guard.

I would also guess piedmont NC for this nice rifle, and yes, that is a very nice triggerguard.  I like the downward angle slope of the griprail; looks comfortable and reminds me of the F. Klette Virginia rifle and several other NC rifles I've seen.

The guard bears a resemblance to the Bogle rifle, similar but different.

Reminded me of the whale rifle in the quality of the iron and filework, a single trigger, and the iconoclastic nature of the tang shape.  http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=4004.0

No assertion of connection (doubt) there is one, but I think the quality of work on this one is comparable, just less of it.
