I finished up another pouch after a few months off. This is the one where I posted problems with dye conflicts turning the panel green. No biggie, I made another panel.

This bag is my seventh leather project, and is from 2-3 ounce leather. It is scalloped welted, and has a half-height divider inside. The rolled edge is sueded deer-hide. The cloth under the flap I bought from Colonial Williamsburg, and has almost a fine-weave burlap look.

It may not look like it, but there is a ton of saddle stitching for a novice like me. Sore fingers.

For some reason the deer-hide edging in the first photo looks way redder than it is in person. It is actually dark brown, as you can see in the other photos.

Many thanks Rich. I completed my first pouch (and first leather project) back last October. This one is my seventh project. I am blessed that my dad is a longtime leathercraftsman and showed me a lot to get started. James Rogers has also been super helpful with tips and instructions.

I think it helps to know what good leather looks like first, then try to figure out the skills to get there. I am far from "there" and have a loooong way to go in learning before I am happy.

Right you are James Rogers. I would say "inspiration" rather than "influence", as your work inspires me to try harder. Seeing each of your projects makes me want to stretch and try new things. I have not yet developed the buckle making skill Greg. That fine looking buckle was cast for me by Richard Lanni. He is quite the skilled metal caster. I only made the tongue and antiqued the buckle. Best wishes, Marc

What kind of tool do you used to make the straight lines across the leather?

I would like to do that on the edge of my straps.

Hi Martin,

The embossed lines that follow the edge of leather are done with a creaser. Here is a picture below. You can adjust the distance the line is from the edge. They take some practice so they don't jump the edge and ruin the leather. Ask me how I know. ;-)

The straight lines done for the rays of the sun, etc are done with a scribe. I lay the design out on my pattern, and transfer it to my leather, then use the scribe to make the lines. I hope this helps. The scribes look sort of like ball-point pens.

There are tons of leatherworking tools. I only have a few.

That's some very nice work, Marc. You really seem to have found a calling. I've made two bags, both way more amateurish than what you've done. I can see a lot of what I've not done right or could do better. Thanks for posting some tips on the tools, that'll help me.
