Joseph Long rifle

Sharing my Joseph Long rifle.  It was originally flintlock and is in pretty much 'in the black' condition.

Very few Joe Longs were made flint. Nice in the black gun. Thanks for posting.

Very nice rifle from him, and very typical for him!
Given he was a late-ish maker he didn't carve or engrave much, but did on a few rifles. But it seems he always made a nice looking gun with enough flourishes to keep them interesting.

Here’s my Joe Long gun.

The barrel has been shortened. There’s a lot of evidence that this one was flint at some period of it’s life.

My rifle has two lock screws.

Nice looking Joe Long rifle. I like that it hasn't been polished up.

What does the washer look like for the other lock screw?

Chris,
Thank you very much for posting photos of your Joe Long rifle.  Great looking example of his work.  If possible, please post a photo of the sideplate area of your rifle.  Two lock bolt JL guns are rare has hen's teeth.  I would also be interested to see a photo of the toeplate area.  As mentioned earlier, JL guns with original flintlock are not typical.  Perhaps your gun is one of his earlier guns?  Maybe, his client was just an old-timer that didn't take to the new-fangled percussion cap technology?

Stoner Creek,
Thank you also posting photos of your rifle.  Is that a push button release on the patchbox lid?  I believe I see a button protruding from the toeplate.  This would also be an unusual feature for a Joe Long gun.  Most, maybe all, of the other Joe Long guns I've seen have the typical Upper Susquehanna lid release that goes through a hole in the back of the buttplate, like the one seen on Chris's gun.

I tried to reply to your PM, twice.  Not sure what's going on there.  Do you have any specific questions about the Bartell rifle?

Thanks, Chris. PM came through that time. I was probably doing something wrong. Not much with these things. I would love to see some more photos of the Bartell rifle when you get a chance. There is absolutely no hurry. Thanks again.
