Southern Outfit
« on: September 01, 2018, 02:06:18 AM »
Here is a southern outfit that i just finished.   The pouch is a day bag from Jim Webbs book.   The horn is a SW VA horn with a applied collar based on the horn on pg#229 from Jay Hopkins book.    The knife is based on a utility knife from Jim's books.   The measure set is my standard tin plated steel set.

Wow!  That is some kit and something I'd be proud to wear from a woods walk to a trophy elk hunt.  What kind of steel is the knife made of?

Nice work Mark as always, of course the horn is what really catches my eye. Saw one of your sets on the Presidents Display table at the CLA show, another piece of fine work.

I used 1085 for the steel for the knife blade.

Very nice set.  I remember that bag in Webb's book.  What are the dimensions you used for the bag?

The dimensions on the bag are approximately 7 1/2" x 7 1/2".

Super nice set, Mark!  I love the color, is that a commercial dye or one of your vinegar stains?

Tim, that President’s Display was pretty awesome...it would be nearly impossible to pick a favorite!

The bag is stained with vinegar and iron with Mink oil and Fieblings dark brown antique finish on top.   The horn is stained with ferric nitrate.

One more question while we are all bombarding you😁...is that a tapered gusset I see or a welt around the outside?  I see the stitching on the back view but not in the front.  Just curious.

There is a 1" wide gusset that goes around the bag and to which the straps are attached.  It is unusual in that it folds inward.   There is no welt.   I made the bag just like it was shown in Webb's book.   There are stitches in the front and back.   I use relatively thin thread and it is darkened with Fieblings Antique Finish to not stand out so much from the leather.   The stitches are visible in the photos on the front and back.

Mark:

Great bag and horn and knife.

How much "fold over" did you use on the gusset and is the upper back of the bag "stiffened" with heavier leather ?

Thanks

The 1" gusset almost folds in half.    I did not stiffen the back of the bag.    Perhaps I should have, but I used 3-4oz leather on the bag.

Wonderful!! The heart shape bags are a real favorite of mine. They keep things in place in the bag, too!

That knife may fall out, bending over, busting brush or heavy activity.   Nice gear.
