  ... ... there is always a fellow at the CLA show who sells hand-forged iron buckles that are light and proper for a bag strap for $8.oo ...cannot remember who he is but someone here might,... this year he was set-up just across from Jim Kibler,... I always pick up two or three for future use,... look authentic for a home-made bag,... regards,... CCF,....

I'm building a bag for a rifle and I'd like the fleur de lis design for the stamps and buckle but I can't find any that I really like.  I've looked at midevil, classical, celtic and every other time period buckles but still nothing that floats my boat.  I'm in the gathering info stage.  I appreciate all the advice.

I've gotten some buckles from Crazy Crow Trading Post and also have bought some from Avalon Forge.

I made several buckles out of mild steel wire and brazed them  with MAP gas.  It is actually pretty easy.  Looks the part too.

or you could get some heavy sheet brass, trace the outer shape you want, drill, coping saw and file the shape buckle you want.  When you cannot find the shape you want you can make the shape you want.

Use the above video as guide for assembling the tongue.

You could use steel as well but the brass is a touch easier to cut and file on and has a nice bling factor when done.

Yep that is how I did it.  But I brazed a lap joint.  For larger buckles I made a rectangle out of the wire and brazed a cross piece in the middle for the buckle tongue to pivot on.  That type of buckle saves making a leather keeper. 

It seems to be the most logical way to make a buckle with limited tools and materials.
