« on: October 16, 2018, 12:58:14 AM »
What are some sources for general building supplies such as files chisels stones silver solder etc.
I am very familiar with Brownel's, and TotW, but are there others i may be over looking?
Havent had mu h luck with my local hardware store, everything seemed like disposable garbage. Even sndpaper is a disapointment.
Thanks

Woodcraft (www.woodcraft.com) is a good supplier of rasps, files and in my opinion, the best wood carving gouges, Pfeil Swiss made.

Muzzle loaders Builders Supply  is always friendly and helpful
big box stores and even hardware stores are about useless,
search on line for a specific  tool, most sets of tools are not needed,
always best to try and get a specific  tool, rather than buying a set and
only using one or two tools,
only flintlocks remain interesting..

Yes,MLBS is a fine supplier. Log Cabin in Lodi,Ohio is another one since 1940.
Dixie seems to be more into selling complete guns of all types in the black powder
realm than parts. There are others but it's too early in the morning to recall all of
them.

Stonewall Creek Outfitters is a place I call sometimes. Good folks.

There are lots of small shops, some even exist without the web.

Also, if a shop doesn't have what you want (despite listing it), be careful ordering and paying ahead of time.  Some do this and it's no good practice for either party.  I didn't name names but there's one you'll hear about.   But it's your money and time, caveat emptor.

As for crappy sandpaper.  Ace Hardware came to my tiny village a few years back, and I quickly started getting stuff there as most of their goods are adequate.  But then they sold their sandpaper contract to the Gorilla co. The first generation of that stuff was horrible as you couldn't fold the wet/dry without compromising the paper.  They finally worked that out.  But bad sandpaper is a crime in itself.

I don't use it for wood much, but mostly for polishing metal.  And other projects non-traditional.

I’ve had good luck with R.E.Davis lock company. They carry a lot more than just locks.
