Gun show find....and it came home with me!
« on: October 31, 2018, 01:16:13 AM »
Price was right and no.4 on the build list was a squirrel gun anyways so I purchased this .36 cal rifle to fill the bill.

This is what I know about it....barrel is 39” with 13/16 flats, won’t know the maker until I tare it down after shooting. Lock is W.L. Cochran dated 1984 and that’s about it, everything else is in the pics. Stock has some good curl to it but it’s so dark it’s hard to see, may do something about that later.

Anyways, I’m tickled with it and the SMR’s have been growing on me for awhile!

How does the mainspring feel, Digger?

I ask, as it looks "up agin itself" in the above photo.

I do like the wood colour!

Pukka, Yes at full cock the mainspring does touch.....is that a bad thing? I'm still fairly new to this game.

LOL, I thought opposite about the color. Was thinking about trying to lighten the color a bit to show more curl/grain.

Almost looks to be identical to the stain on the rifle I bought at Dixons many years ago.
I'll be re-finishing it this winter - can't stand it any more. Mine has some curl as well, but
is almost invisible due to the dark stain.

I cleaned the barrel while on the stock while at a rendezvous, using Wipe Out black powder
solvent-in-a-can, due to pressure from a friend?  Anyway, a dribble of solvent got past the toothpick
in the vent, and ran down the stock, from lock mortice to the butt plate.  This drip left a white line
in the finish, going right through the oil and stain, removing both from the wood.

Thus, I need to re-finish mine as well. I am thinking Taylor will have an opportunity to show me
how well his aqua-fortis does on this stock.

You should as well Digger. That is actually a really nicely curled stock.

Daryl,

I'm in hopes that I find a good tutorial here on refinishing, been poking around without much luck.

Thanks everyone for the comments. :)

I know you're happy with that rifle; I'd be super delighted with that beauty.

That is a sweet rifle.  I think just "rubbing" out some of the dark might suffice to give it that used look while showing some grain.

Huntschool, never thought about rubbing it back, may be the way I go. Would using 0000 steel wool be a good way to rub it back?

Thanks for the idea.

digger658:

Everyone has their own method to rub it ......  If you have not done it before then perhaps 0000 steel wool or scotch bright will work for you.  You need to do a little and then look at it.  I would suggest looking at other builders guns and observe their "lighter" or rubbed back areas.  Yhink of where the hands of a shooter are on the gun the most...

Remember, this is to show some grain but in the right places.....  Go slow until you get the feel for it.  If the oil finish is heavy it may take you a bit to hit the color.....  again, go slow....

Just my thoughts.
