Any Bedford County Rifle Builders Out There?
« on: November 16, 2018, 10:45:04 PM »
For years I have wanted a percussion Bedford County rifle.  Not one with dozens of inlays.  Just a few and a patchbox.  Can not afford one right now, but would like to contact a builder.

Mark Wheland built me a fine rifle in the style of Daniel Border in 2015. Sorry I don't have the capability to post pictures, but I couldn't ask for a nicer Bedford

Posting pictures can't be any easier than on this site.  There's a short tutorial on it.  Would love to see Mark's work!!

That's a nice gun, probably the best modern made Bedford I have seen.

The second from the right is my copy of Thomas Oldham's Bedford.  He moved to Clayton County Iowa in 1854 and had a blacksmith shop on a farm five miles from where I was born.  My mother graduated from Colesburg High School with his granddaughter Beulah, who I met and talked with years ago.  I know of no Iowa made Oldham rifles.  I copied this rifle from photos of two of his rifles, one in "Behold the Longrifle Again" by Whisker, pages 152 and 154, and the other in "Gunsmiths of Bedford, Somerset and Fulton Counties" by Whiskers, page 116.  The inlays are sterling silver.

Mark Wheland really did a great job on that Bedford.

I love Bedfords, but opted to start building  a Somerset instead. I did this because flint Bedfords are nearly nonexistent, and flintlocks available today are either poor quality, or an obvious adaptations from two different lock styles. The limited lock options, and not being fond of the most common Bedford “Q tip patchbox” got me looking at Somerset school rifles that use a similar stock style, but more traditional locks, and a variety of patchboxes.
These gun are very comfortable to shoot offhand, but not so much off a bench. They also are most often seen in small calibers, because they are almost alway long, slender, and relatively light, which doesn’t lend itself to large calibers.

They are really nice looking rifles, and Mark Wheland certainly leads the pack with his rendition.  I'd be proud to have any of them in my rifle rack.

Hungry Horse, now I will have to go look at Somerset rifles!

Craig, Somersets are harder to find than Bedfords, because the Bedford smiths  are better known, and the locks are so distinctive. Some of the Somerset rifles are very Bedfordlike and some aren’t. I think much of this has to do with where, and from whom, the gunsmith apprenticed. The long slender lines, with the low comb, and radical drop, are feature both schools share, to some degree.

Herb, that Bedford of yours is a handsome rifle as well, and the backstory on the original gunsmith is fascinating. May I ask what lock you used?

It is Track's Bedford County percussion lock.  I built it in 2009.  I cut off some of the long tail, reducing it from 5.45" to 5.10" to match the lock in the Bedford County book..
